Cannabinoids can be found in Cannabis (weed, pot, weed)

Pharmacodynamics
- Cannabinoids including tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), is the most psychoactive
ingredient.
- As the sample ages, its THC content declines.
- Samples contains 8% to almost zero
- Smoke from a cannabis cigarette (inhale and hold the breathe to allow
maximum absorption) delivers 25-50% of the THC content to the respiratory
tract.
- Half-life (4 days)
- Extremely lipid soluble, stored in body fat from which they are slowly
released.
- Hepatic drug-metabolising enzymes are inhibited
Pharmacokinetics
- Endocannabinoid neuromodulatory system is composed of:
Cannabinoid CB1-receptors (expressed by hypothalamic and peripheral
neurons) and
CB2-receptors (expressed only in the periphery of immune cells) together with
their endogenous ligands (endocannabinoids)
- Has a role in physiological processes including food intake and energy
homeostasis.
- Cannabinoids act as agonists at CB1 and CB2 receptors
- Psychological reactions last for about 2-3 hours after the first inhale of smoke
- Euphoria (affective state in which a person experiences pleasure and
excitement) is common and is believed to follow stimulation of the limbic
system reward pathways causing release of dopamine
- Giggling and laughter may be observed. Sensations become more vivid,
especially vision and contrast and intensity of color can increase, although no
change in acuity occurs.
- Size of objects and distance is distorted.
- Sense of timelessness.
- Recent memory and selective attention are impaired. Easily distracted.
- Memory defects can last a week.
- All these depends on the amount intake.

Uses
- Can be used to help obese patient to lose weight. The first of a new class of
CB1-receptor antagonists, rimonabant, reduced body weight and improved
cardiovascular risk factors (HDL-cholesterol, triglycerides, insulin resistance)
in obese patient within a year. May cause nausea and depression and is
contraindicated in pregnancy
- In neuropathic pain, due to damaged neural tissue, data from well-controlled
but limited duration trials suggest that THC is similar to codeine in potency is
safe and is not associated with tolerance or dependence
- It regulates bone mass; cannabinoid receptors may have a role in treatment
of osteoporosis
- Some researches that supports treatment of multiple sclerosis
Adverse Effects
A) Acute
- Timelessness
- loss of control of mental processes
- feelings of unease
- Hallucinations and flashbacks

B) Chronic
-Paranoid thinking
-High or habitual use can be followed by psychotic state; usually irreversible.
-Withdrawal syndrome (depression, anxiety, sleep disturbance, tremor and
other symptoms). Abandoning cannabis is difficult for many users.
-Damage in bronchial epithelium.
-Impaired fetal growth.
