"Mother's Day"
The modern holiday of Mother's Day was first
celebrated in 1908, when Anna Jarvis held a memorial
for her mother at St. Andrew's Methodist Church in
Grafton, West Virginia. St. Andrew's Methodist
Church now holds the International Mother's Day
Shrine. Her campaign to make Mother's Day a recog-
nized holiday in the United States began in 1905, the
year her mother, Ann Reeves Jarvis, died. Ann Jarvis
had been a peace activist who cared for wounded sol-
diers on both sides of the American Civil War, and
created Mother's Day Work Clubs to address public
health issues. Anna Jarvis wanted to honor her mother
by continuing the work she started and to set aside a
day to honor all mothers, because she believed that
they were the person who has done more for you than
anyone in the world. Wikepedia
Last month we celebrated Easter, the culmina-
tion of Jesus' life, teaching, passion, and resurrection.
These are times of wonder, awe, enlightenment, doubt,
fear, despair, waiting, and joy. And it makes me think
right off of two people--Mary, the mother of Jesus, and
my mom.
According to Scripture and the infancy stories
of Jesus, the order of expected events didn't happen in
the way they "normally" do. These were extraordinary
events in the lives of this observant Jewish family
from Nazareth, and certainly for the rest of the world.
It is a great opportunity to follow Mary especially
from Advent through Easter because through her eyes,
to a degree, I can see and imagine the tremendous love
and trust she had in the Unseen God of her ancestors,
as she watched and encouraged her son to be the per-
son God had created him to be. She protected and sur-
rounded him the best she could, as a mother eagle pro-
tectively surrounds her chicks with her wings. But
then, she had to let him go. She had done everything
she could to form and nourish this young man to em-
brace the harshness of life in love, peace, strength,
courage, and to change the world forever, as she imag-
ined God's purpose for God's Son would be. And I be-
lieve she knew, and she was told by Simeon, that a
sword would pierce her heart-her heart would be bro-
ken.

Jesus changed the world for all time, and we
as Christians embrace his story intimately as we live
our own story, encouraged by his Love, Truth, and
Way. We strive, imperfectly, for peace and justice
through relationship (or not) with our families; we
face both the good, the challenging, and sometimes
the bad, with those we trust most, hanging on the
best we can to the encouragement and love we have
hopefully received throughout our lives.
As a mother myself, with each growing son/
adult son, daughters-in-law, I continue to look on in
wonder at God's creations, loving and encouraging
them the best I can. With the teaching and love of
Jesus, their foundation, to guide them as they go, I let
them go, even as the energy of my proverbial
mother's wings still surround them in love.
I think of Mary weeping at the foot of the
cross again, as Jesus gazes upon all the emotions
expressing themselves through hot, cleansing tears,
and says to his mother, "Woman, behold, your son,"
and "John, behold your mother." In doing this
beautiful thing while he suffered
unimaginable pain, Jesus embraced
humanity in all its pain and suffering, and
embraced especially the bond between
mother and child, in whatever form that relationship
may take.
And I think, as I should, of my own mom. I
thank her for her love and encouragement, I
apologize to her for hurt I have caused over the
years, I love her the very best I can as an adult child,
and I gently give her to Christ--as long as I have her
here on earth, and as she will eventually take her last
breath. Mothers, what a blessing!

My kids are devastated from their fathers

tient for years. My husband was diagnosed when
our youngest was two years old. Almost all of his
life, our son has lived with the possibility of his
father dying and also with the threat of both his
parents being deported. It has traumatized him.
I was at work the other day when someone
ran into the office, saying, ICE (Immigration and
Customs Enforcement) is driving around in the
neighborhood! I was terrified. What would happen
to my children if Im deported? They are still griev-
ing the death of their father, and now, what if I get
deported? Every time I drive, Im worried that Ill be
picked up.
The other day I was driving from one place
to another, and I know that ICE was following me. I
saw them in my rearview mirror. What am I sup-
posed to do? Stay behind locked doors in my
house? How will I work? How will I buy food, make
my house payment, pay the electric bill? I have
been in Des Moines for twenty years.
My husband had and I have no criminal
record nothing. Our daughter is a student at the
university, and our son is in high school. If Im sent
back to the country in which I was born, what will
happen to my son? Should he come with me? But
then he would lose his educational opportunities.
Hes a very good student. All I have are questions.
No one has the answers. Lawyers cant even tell
me whats going to happen because no one
knows.
