Who does the Church belong to?

We have recently been successful in our bid for Heritage Lottery Grant Funding for
urgent repair works to one of our church buildings (congratulations East Walton!)
One of the questions on the HLF application form is: 'Who owns the building?' We
didn't actually have to answer this as for churches it's 'N/A - not applicable!
So who does the Church belong to? Well, that is an interesting question.
The Church (meaning a body of people who meet together regularly) belongs to
those who are part of it. The Church is a family or a fellowship. However it's not true
to say the Church belongs only to those who use it because the Church belongs to
the communities in which they are set.
In essence, your parish church belongs to you, in a very special way.
The Church of England offers services not only regular services (of all styles) every
week throughout the year but also for special occasions and those most important
moments in our lives. The Church has been here for everyone for generations and
has baptised, married and buried parishioners, being available not just to those who
regularly worship at church on a Sunday, but all parishioners. There are also
important celebrations at special times of the year that many people from our
parishes enjoy Easter, Christmas and Remembrance Sunday to name just a few.
And it's not just about church services, the Church can and does offer much more.
The Church is there for its community to offer support to everyone within the
geographical parish and the Rector or Vicar is available to everyone. The Church is
also a very special place where anyone can come to find a few moments of peace,
solitude and solace.
It's also good to remember just how much churches have contact in their
communities.
Our work in schools is just one of the ways that church meets community and shows
our face to the world. We live in a time when, sadly, many people are turning away
from the church. I think it is so important that our younger generation grow up with
the knowledge that the Church is here for them and always will be at any time in their
lives should they wish to turn to it for friendship or support.
The Church has, and will continue, to provide a place for everyone - young, old and in
between and we look forward to serving you for a long time to come. After all what is
the Church here for?
Only a couple of weeks ago we celebrated Easter. I have in my mind a picture of that
man, Jesus, who hangs on a cross with arms outstretched, symbol of the love God
has for all humankind, and a constant reminder to me that the Church, and
particularly your Parish Church, is not just for 'the chosen few' but for all of you out
there!
Who does the church belong to? It belongs to you because you belong.

It is very noticeable how people react when they see a vehicle with a blue light
flashing, but reactions can be quite different to yellow flashing lights on top of the
vehicles collecting the refuse bins. When the brightly clothed collectors are coming
out of the drives with heavy bins - I wonder if a car could stop in time when passing at
speed if one man fell by accident? In wet or fine weather they work so hard to clear
our bins - I am just suggesting that we should always take care when passing them.
It is very noticeable that even when there's no wind the little compost bins are often
lying on their sides!
It was good to see blankets on some horses after a cold night such as we have had
recently.
What a marvellous sight the fields of yellow rape are, showing hard work rewarded.
Coming back from Lynn I noticed the grass verges had been cut - many thanks to the
grass cutters who patiently cut around the fading daffodil plants.
I hope the late frost will not affect the early planted vegetables, we shall have to see.
It was good to hear of all the services in our local Anglican and Methodist churches
celebrating over the Easter weekend.
Have you eaten all your chocolate eggs and rabbits yet?!

Can any one help please

I am researching the former Eastern Counties Omnibus Company and they

acquired a company in Grimston called W.J. Rasberry in 1951 and an company
called R & U.D. Palmer in Gt. Massingham in 1936. Can I please ask if you would
be so kind as to ask anyone you think may be able to assist with information, old
photos and recollections for both companies. Would there be any descendants of
both the Rasberry and Palmer families still around ? I believe the Rasberry bus

The Mayor's Civic Awards for Voluntary Service 2016

Congratulations to two local residents who received this award at the presentation
ceremony in King's Lynn Town Hall on Wednesday March 29th 2017.

Dorothy Willingham, RSPCA Charity Shop supporter for 20 years.

David Giles, a trustee of Grimston Village Hall, also caretaker and bookings
contact, a great advocate for the Hall for many years.

This was a wonderful evening when more than thirty people received the award.

 Holly Meadows School

An Egg-citing start to the Summer term at Holly Meadows with a whole school
Easter Egg Hunt across our extensive school grounds. Eggs and Easter Sweets
were kindly provided by the PTA and funded by the Morgan family, thank you very
much!
New themes and displays are well under-way around school. Activities In Early
years and Key Stage 1 will be inspired by 'Pirates' and in Key Stage 2, children
will be developing their Geographical knowledge through map work and local
studies.
Not long now until our first 'Meadowfest' on the 20th May, organised by our
fantastic PTA. It is a great opportunity for the many community groups to join
together to raise some much needed funds for our lovely school and themselves.
We are really hoping that this event will support our development of the school
library, allow us to purchase some more musical instruments, items to enhance
our outdoor school environment and for equipment for 'Forest School' sessions at
Holly Meadows when we re-launch this in September. Do come along and join in
the fun!

Grimston Parish Council

The Council have pledged 1000 to support the Holly Meadows Youth Football Club.
The Club are hoping to raise funds to purchase floodlights to be sited at Holly
Meadows School to allow more teams to train on winter evenings. The grant will be
paid once the relevant permissions have been agreed and the work commissioned.
The Council congratulated David Giles on his well-deserved Mayor's Award for
Voluntary Service. The citation praised Mr Giles' long and generous service to the
local community through his involvement with the Village Hall and Hudson Fen
Leisure Ltd.
The Council noted the campaign by UK Power Networks to raise awareness of its
Priority Services Register for vulnerable users. It was agreed that details should be
posted in the Village Link.
The Annual Parish Meeting of Grimston Electors will be held on Monday 8 May at the
Village hall at 7.00pm. The May Parish Council Meeting will follow on after this
meeting.

SORE THROAT
Sore throats are often caused by
viruses and usually settle within
one to two weeks without the need
for any medical treatment. White
spots on the tonsils do not imply a
need for antibiotics.

Paracetamol should be taken for pain. Follow the advice on

the pack.

Salt gargles may be used to ease a sore throat in adults and

children over 12. Dissolve two teaspoons of salt in half a glass
of water, gargle and spit out. Repeat several times a day.

Please do not ask for antibiotics as refusal may offend

Many people give reasons for asking for antibiotics to treat sore
throats. Im going on holiday, Im getting married or Ive
got exams are commonly cited. Viruses are immune to such
reasoning and antibiotics are no more likely to be effective on
these occasions.

When to see the doctor

If a sore throat is so severe that you cannot drink
If hoarseness persists for more than six weeks
If a child who is ill refuses to drink
If you think that you (or your child) are seriously unwell

 MeadowFest Comes to Holly Meadows
On Saturday 20th May from 12-5 the PTA at Holly Meadows Primary School will
be holding MeadowFest on the school field.

This is a fete/fun day incorporating a football tournament, live music, craft stalls,
traditional fete stalls, dog show and refreshments.

Our dog show has very kindly been sponsored by Sunnyside Veterinary Clinic in
Roydon and Justin Kirkland from the clinic will be coming along to judge each
class. There will be 8 classes in total (Best Puppy, Loveliest lady, Fab fella,
Waggiest tail, Most appealing eyes, Young handler (under 16's), Best groomed
and finally Dog judge would most like to take home) each class costs 1 to enter
and you can register your dog on the day (dog show starts at 2.30pm).

Also during the afternoon we have live music provided by a variety of musicians
playing everything from classical to current chart music, along with our school's
very own Glee club and Samba drummers.

We are looking forward to welcoming groups from our community who will also be
holding traditional fete stalls to fundraise for their groups plus some fantastic craft
stalls coming along to sell their products.

If you want to spend the afternoon with us without worrying about spending a
fortune we also have free activities available as well as our live music! Cheer on
Holly Meadows Youth FC Under 9's in their very first home football tournament,
explore a police car or fire engine and practice your circus skills with Crazy
Banana's Children's Entertainer.

Refreshments are also available with a bar being provided by The Union Jack,
Indian cuisine and Polish cakes and delicacies. We also have burgers, hot dogs,
milk shakes and donuts to tempt you! And finally what fete would be complete
without an ice cream van, bouncy castles or Face painting??
MeadowFest promises to be a real family and community event and we look
forward to welcoming everyone to our school.

The PTA work hard all year to fundraise for equipment to enhance the children's
learning as well as those little extras that school budgets would not allow. This
event is to fundraise to relaunch Forest School as well as to purchase outdoor
learning resources and revamp our school library, all things which will benefit
every child in our school.

MeadowFest is getting bigger all the time and it's not too late to join us!! If you

 Grimston and District Good Companions

Our April meeting had two highlights - the first being the Easter Bonnet competition.
There was a lovely selection of hats on show, in a wide variety of colours, materials
and shapes, and decorated with chicks, ribbons, leaves and fresh blossoms - all very
beautiful, which made it difficult for the judges!
This was followed by a special tea provided by members of the committee and
included a home made simnel cake and donated chocolate eggs and rabbits.
Our May meeting is a return trip to the fascinating gardens at Elgoods in Wisbech and
at our June meeting we shall be entertained by the Flukes ukulele band.
New members are always welcome, as are visitors - for details just ring Nick on

Next meeting is the Annual Parish Council Meeting on Monday 15th May at
Congham Hall 7pm
The Annual Parish Meeting took place on March 27th 2017.
The Chair gave his Annual report for 2016 and welcomed residents from
ConghamYour Councillors are Cllr L Rust (Chair ), Cllr L Grange ( Vice Chair ),
Cllr J Compton,, Cllr N Grief, Cllr H Scase, Cllr B Williamson and Cllr S Palmer.
We have managed to maintain our precept for the 5th year which funds the
activities in Congham including the grant from the Borough Council at 4700 for
2016 - 2017 including a Borough Council grant of 80.Congham Parish Council
was pleased to hand over the new Role of Honour, identifying and honouring all
those young men from Congham who played a part in the 1st & 2nd World Wars.
It was displayed at the Remembrance Day afternoon tea in St Andrews Church.
Congham Parochial Church Council have agreed to hang the Role of Honour in
the Church.Highway Rangers visit Congham every 3 months to deal with minor
highway issues such as clearing out ditches, cutting back the banks and keeping
the roads clear. The Clerk is pleased to hear of any issues that you are concerned
about and will report them for action. At last the ditch adjacent to the Cricket field
has been dug out and cleared. It is hoped that this will now be kept well
maintained. Following serious concerns regarding speeding along the B1153 the
Parish Council has had a number of discussions with Highways in the hope of
obtaining some speed restrictions along the Little Congham stretch. The type of
road classification prohibits us from making such a speed restriction request, and
an alternative solution is financially prohibitive, with unproven advantages. We
have, however, persuaded Highways to reduce the height of the bank on the
corner of the B1153 with St Andrews Lane; this should help to provide clear
visibility from the Grimston direction.
I am sure that you have all enjoyed the daffodils again, planted by Councillors and
three volunteers from Low Rd. Please bring any further ideas for improving the
village to the Clerk.All items of concern for discussion at the Parish Council items
or concerns should be brought to the attention of the Clerk, who can then ensure
that it is put on the agenda.
Planning applications. There have been an increasing number of planning
applications for small developments in Congham this year which the Parish
Council has responded to. It welcomes comments from residents in helping us to
reach an appropriate recommendation. The Parish Council regularly responds to
highway problems, potholes etc and contributes to the maintenance of the
Churchyard, as well as keeping you all informed of current activities through the

What is it?
Messy Church has been running in
the Village Hall at Gayton now for
nearly 6 years. It has proved very
popular throughout that time with
children and parents alike because
it is such fun!

The Spring Show and Supper was attended by 63 members including three new
ones.

Elsegood Family Butchers provided a delicious Hog Roast, which was greatly
enjoyed and appreciated.

The Spring flowers were strikingly beautiful and dominated one end of the Village
Hall. They were judged by Mrs Jenny Baker.

The winners of the five categories were:

The Chairman thanked Jenny Baker and Phil, Margi and Jan from Elsegoods'
Butchers for their important contribution to the evening's success. A bouquet of
flowers and a card were presented to Phil and Margi Garrod who were celebrating
their Ruby Wedding Anniversary that day.

Greenfingers will be supporting Meadowfest at Holly Meadows School on

Saturday May 20th.

Some seats are still available for the visit to Somerleyton Hall on June 21st.

Members have chosen to support Little Discoverers as their charity for 2017.
Representatives of the charity will come to the May meeting to tell us more about
their work.

The Plant & Cake Sale in aid of club funds is on Saturday May 27th in the Village
Hall from 10 am until 12 noon. Members were reminded to provide plants and
cakes and to bring them to the hall before 10 am. All plants should be labelled!

Our next meeting is on May 9th when Colin Ward from Swines' Meadow Nursery
will be speaking on Hostas.

Open Church - St Andrew's Congham, Saturday 6th May between 11am and
2pm.

After many years of planning and much fundraising effort, work is nearing
completion on improvements at St Andrew's Church in Congham.

We are being connected to mains water supply and have installed a sink and
cupboards in the base of the tower. A social area has been created at the back of
the church.

All of this has been done while maintaining the integrity of the building, which has
been a focal point of the village for centuries. The new facilities will ensure that
the church continues as a place of worship and also as a building that can be
used by the community for meetings, exhibitions and social events.

We are holding an 'Open Church' event on Saturday 6th May between 11am and
2pm and look forward to welcoming visitors to see the progress so far. Tea,
coffee, cakes and biscuits will be served.

If arriving by car there is some parking in the car park off Church Hill. Please
drive carefully and park considerately.

April 1917 A Dark Month for our villages

As more of our men went into action the casualties mounted and in April 1917
the villages experienced the highest losses yet seen.
George Hanslip (of Roydon) who had emigrated to Canada and was therefore
th
serving with the Canadians was killed on 30 March 1917 and during the
following weeks four more men were killed in addition to the much respected
Jonathan Twite of whom we wrote last edition. The smaller village of Congham
took a particularly bad hit losing three of its young men in three weeks. John
Blake and Thomas Harper died in the Middle East whilst Horace Rallison and
William Goodburn were killed on the Western Front.

John Blake died April 19 1917

The Blake family lived in Pott, John's father Charles was the local vermin catcher.
John was in the Lynn Territorials so he was called up on 5th August 1914 into 1st/5th
Battalion Norfolk Regiment. The regiment was sent to the Dardanelles arriving
on 9th August 1915. John was sent home in November with dysentery, he returned
to Egypt on 11th January 1917. In April of that year the battalion was involved in
the 2nd Battle of Gaza. The 1/5ths advanced behind a tank and entered a redoubt
the enemy artillery was then concentrated on the redoubt destroying the tank and
killing many of the men. It is during this battle that John was killed, the 1/5th
Norfolk had 113 men dead or missing. And with wounded the battalion is
estimated to have lost up to 75% of its men.
Initially the family were told that John was missing perhaps a prisoner and they
had to wait until January 1918 to be told that he was dead. John was buried in the
Gaza Cemetery in what was then Palestine.

William Goodburn died Monday 23 April 1917

William was born in 1887 to parents James and Sarah Ann he was one of five
children. William worked in Congham as a farm labourer for all of his early adult
life.
William joined the Royal Artillery probably having been conscripted in 1916.
William's battery was part of 76th Brigade which included the 2nd battalion Suffolk
Regiment and the 1st Gordon Highlanders amongst others.
23rd April 1917 was the start of the 2nd Battle of Scarpe part of the Arras
Campaign. The artillery begun the barrage at 4.45 a.m. William was killed on that
first day, how and where we don't know. The cemetery where he is believed to be
buried, Lievin Communal Cemetery Extension contains the graves of seven
hundred British soldiers most of whom were killed in April 1917. William has a
special memorial stating Buried near this spot.

 The Last Word

A couple of reports recently on the media interested me above so much we hear

these days from the newscasts. Being Easter holidays, among the many egg
rolling competitions came a report about a survey taken from 2,000 ordinary
citizens whether the stone guarding the tomb of Jesus, King of the Jews, was
really rolled away to allow inquisitive folk to see that the body had disappeared.
How many of the 2,000 approached really believed in the resurrection of the
dead, based on the first Easter Day event celebrated by the worldwide church.
Nominal believers who ticked the survey as Christians, revealed that 23% did not
believe the statement in the creed that Jesus was buried and on the third day
rose again. A much higher proportion said that they did, but a number of those
said they lacked certainty so there are still a good number of doubting Thomas
pilgrims around. Those who answered no to being religious, said they believed
there was something after death, but did not know what it was. Others that they
believed in reincarnation, not surprising in our multicultural society today.
There was no mention of the Christian scriptures (the Bible), which would have
helped those lacking certainty peppered as they are with plenty of evidence that
the great event of Easter Day is firmly in the history books and not a piece of
folklore to perpetuate the memory of the founder of the tradition of the English.
Talking of which brings me to my second report on the fascinating practice of
match making.

How can my darling daughter find the perfect match for marriage, or vice versa
my upright son to ensure the family line is continued, happiness unsullied and
loyalty unswerving? When I served as a Christian missionary in South Korea, I
learnt that one of the responsibilities of a good pastor was to act as the church's
matchmaker. No explanation that I was an English gentleman and that delicate
role was not on my job description helped when being teased about the shortfall
in my expected duties! A report on this kindly and lucrative service in today's
British society brought a smile to my face, when the said matchmaker showing off
his office files for those of all the different faiths, except the Christian faith, ended
with the last one marked simply the English! Well I grant you, dear matchmaker,
it is almost impossible to know what the English believe these days as the earlier
report surely indicates. When an English man makes a proposal of marriage, let
us hope he has had someone to give him good counsel!
