A REVOLUTIONARY SOFTWARE TOOL

dbDiver!-Diagnostics represents a revolutionary new software concept.
dbDiver!-Diagnostics is an innovative software tool for developing tailored Expert System applications which
provide performance diagnostics and generate qualitative databases for executive decision-making.

Where typical database instruments only deal with raw data, dbDiver!-Diagnostics uses an inference engine
and other Artificial Intelligent techniques to generate a parallel diagnostics database. dbDiver!-Diagnostics 's
Executive Information System permits simultaneous analysis of both the quantitative input database and the
parallel diagnostics database.
dbDiver!-Diagnostics follows the relational database model, making this powerful tool familiar and simple to
use.

SOPHISTICATED ADVICE WITH A PRACTICAL NEW TOOL

Experienced managers receive a continual stream of information and analyze it almost by instinct. They
wade through standardized reports, select relevant information, compare numbers from different sources,
estimate a number of indexes and finally generate conclusions.
Other spreadsheets or executive information systems produce financial ratios and reports, and some
provide simple interpretations of these indexes. But dbDiver!-Diagnostics adds extra power and agility
because it offers sophisticated advice in very flexible formats and lets you easily adjust the criteria for
making these recommendations. dbDiver!-Diagnostics gives you the tools to create and analyze specific
expert diagnostics in a straightforward manner.
dbDiver!-Diagnostics is the ideal tool for executive decision-making!

HOW DOES dbDiver!-Diagnostics WORK?

dbDiver!-Diagnostics proceeds through three logical stages in order to assist managers in complex decision-
making:
1) dbDiver!-Diagnostics creates a relational database with information retrieved from all over the firm.
2) dbDiver!-Diagnostics emulates the manager's reasoning process to associate data with concepts; it
calculates and evaluates indexes to generate a "diagnostics database".
3) dbDiver!-Diagnostics permits users to query this diagnostics database and to design customized reports
and graphs.
Applications developed with dbDiver!-Diagnostics can offer advice in areas such as inventory management,
debt structuring, marketing penetration, financial or organizational analysis and project control.
- dbDiver!-Diagnostics is a simple tool to use:
dbDiver!-Diagnostics incorporates downdrilling techniques to navigate through the data. While looking
at any screen, the user can simply point at the desired cell and a more detailed report relating to the
corresponding data will instantly appear on the monitor.
- dbDiver!-Diagnostics is flexible and customizable:
dbDiver!-Diagnostics lets the user develop tailored Expert System applications easily. Analytical criteria
may be added or modified instantly and it does not require expert programmers because it incorporates
a 4GL interface. The user can easily browse through the data and develop menus, reports, graphs and
help screens.
- dbDiver!-Diagnostics is powerful:
dbDiver!-Diagnostics 's inference engine incorporates a complete backward chaining Expert System
language. Furthermore, its input and output follow a relational database model. This allows users to
develop highly complex applications when necessary.

BUILDING AN APPLICATION
Data Outline Definition
dbDiver!-Diagnostics's user interface helps you to tailor any
applications data structure to your needs. dbDiver!-Diagnostics
automatically builds a database containing the diagnostics
related to their corresponding financial concepts and time
periods. Modify the data outline and add any other pieces of
information to the database as needed.

Group Editing (step 1)

The appropriate definition of data groups allows development of
powerful applications using only a few formulas and rules. For
example, a single formula may be applied to a group
representing all Consumer Complaints indicators. In this way,
any expert rule may automatically be applied to all data in a
particular group.

DBDIVER!-DIAGNOSTICS Business Logic Systems, Inc.

Group Editing (step 2)

dbDiver!-Diagnosticss interface has been tailored for rapid
application development. To add, define or modify a group,
simply point at the corresponding numbers or rows in the
database.

17

Data Formulas (step 1)

dbDiver!-Diagnostics is a database-based program. However, its
commands replicate some of the flexibility of a spreadsheet. The
user may create data row formulas and data column formulas.
For example, data row formulas may be applied to calculate
totals or to estimate percentages, and data column formulas may
be used for forecasting applications.

DBDIVER!-DIAGNOSTICS Business Logic Systems, Inc.

Data Formulas (step 2)

A number of Dialog Boxes have been designed for the easy
creation of data formulas. For example, to create a simple group
formula with two operands, the user only needs to point at the
corresponding groups and select an
operator.

Creating the EIS Screens (step 1)

To facilitate the creation of a powerful, useful and elegant
graphical user interface in any final application, dbDiver!-
Diagnostics presents a menu of pre-defined and customizable
screen types. To create a new screen, simply select a screen type
and fill in the blanks. To define the downdrilling scheme, just
indicate the name of the screen to be called when the user
presses any particular graph.

Creating the EIS Screens (step 2)

To define any graphic chart in a EIS screen, the user must only
point at the corresponding data series.

Editing Data Tests (step 1)

To add, modify, duplicate or delete a data test (also called a data
rule), select the edit command. dbDiver!-Diagnostics will show
a listing of all existing tests and a control panel showing the
available programming options.

Editing Data Tests (step 2)

Data tests may contain associated messages, charts, graphics or
even video clips. If the test proves to be TRUE, these will be
shown together with the data to which the test has been applied.

23

Editing Data Tests (step 3)

Each data test may be classified according to action categories.
These categories may represent priorities, departments, actions
(like a call or meeting) or the people responsible of these
projects, as in the case illustrated by this screen.

Editing Data Tests (step 4)

Data tests are based on a logical formula of the form
IF(condition). When condition proves to be TRUE, then the
associated messages will be shown during the query phase. To
facilitate the creation of complicated expressions --which might
even contain calls to neural nets and genetic algorithms--,
dbDiver!-Diagnostics incorporates an integrated formula
definition tool. Just point at the data and select the appropriate
operands.

Expert Tests
Expert tests are effectively Expert System rules of the form
IF(condition), where condition is only based on the results
generated by other rules or tests. This means that, after data
tests translate data into diagnostics, expert tests build a logic
chain of ever-higher intelligence based on those diagnostics.

26
DBDIVER!-DIAGNOSTICS Business Logic Systems, Inc.

Tests Evaluation
After defining the data structure and tests, dbDiver!-Diagnostics
runs all tests and it automatically builds a database containing
the diagnostics. dbDiver!-Diagnostics can process data and
expert tests and generate in just seconds large structured
databases of diagnostics to be queried immediately!

Intelligent Diagnostic Views in dbDiver!-Diagnostics

The view menu presents four alternate ways to look at the data and its associated diagnostics. One
of them is the customized EIS interface, which has been already discussed. The other three
options let the user easily find any diagnostics associated to the original data. Option DIAGNOSTICS
shows diagnostics classified by their higher-level significance (their associated expert diagnostics).
Option ACTION CATEGORIES shows diagnostics classified by priorities, departments, persons
responsible within the firm, etc. Option DATA shows the original numbers with their associated
diagnostics, when applicable.
