Science Lesson Reflection

March 15th 2017, was my second lesson observation. In this lesson, I taught Science
subject under the topic vertebrate animals. Positive and negative aspects occurred within my
lesson such as: effective learning, participation, enjoyment, negative behavior and time
management issues.
To elaborate, students succeeded with producing and knowing the different types of
vertebrate animals. This is because, explanations were detailed and questions were asked to
ensure that students are receiving and producing the right information. Questions played an
important role in this lesson, because it ensured and assess students understanding and gave me
an idea about what needs to be clarified and explained again.
Secondly, all of the students got involved and participated within the activities and the
game that was held. In which, all of the activities required the students to discuss between each
other the answers of the questions that were given to them. Therefore, in my opinion I think that
since my lesson contained movements, hands on activities and think pair share strategy, students
were encouraged and motivated towards learning. This is because, students were applying what
they have been learning by using their cognitive skills in sorting the different types of animals
according to their vertebrate groups instead of making them dictate and retell the announced
information.
Thirdly, enjoyment was seen throughout the lesson. I know this because, all of the
students were excited to come up with their partners to the board and paste their pictures of
animals according to their vertebrate groups. Moreover, students participation and involvement
proves that they were enjoying what they have been learning which would result as effective and
efficient learning.
Fourthly, during the lesson students were misbehaving and were asked to follow the rules
more than once. Such thing occurred because, according to my MST, I was told that students
could be unmanageable after having their lunch and playing time. Due to the type of food they
eat and sugar makes them hyperactive and such thing will affect their behavior. Thus, the
classroom behavior system was applied, yet students werent responding. Hence, such issue
could be adapted by reinforcing the students who are well behaving by giving them stickers and
praise them. In such way, other students would want to be rewarded and praised as well which
will attempt occurring their positive behavior.
Finally, moving from activity to another took more than the expected timing. In which,
students took long time to complete the given activities and such thing affected their behavior.
This happened because, students werent reminded continually with the time duration of
completing the tasks and they werent given warnings. However, such issue could be enhanced in
my future lessons by giving them warnings and reminding them of the time that is left for
completing the given tasks.
Overall, in my opinion I think that my teaching skills developed and enhanced than my
first lesson. Though, negative aspects occurred but without negative or unexpected
situations/aspects I will not learn, develop, and improve my teaching skills. According to the
feedback that I received from both of my MST and MCT, they liked the lesson and gave me
some advices to apply in my future lessons.
