Lesson Title: Classifying Animals

Context:
This lesson was created to help students classify the different types of animals based on their
physical characteristics. This lesson will be taught after we go over the different types of animal
classifications such as mammals, birds, amphibians, reptile, fish, and insects.
Objectives:
Students will be able to analyze the difference between the six types of animal classifications,
and will be able to categorize animals into the right category.
State Standards:
2.L.5A.1 Obtain and communicate information to classify animals (such as mammals, birds,
amphibians, reptiles, fish, or insects) based on their physical characteristics.
Materials: YouTube, IPad, PowerPoint, Classify It!, Kahoot
Procedures:
Introduction (10 Minutes): I will start the class by taking attendance and reviewing what we
learned from the previous class. I will then explain each station that they will be participating in.
Then I will count students off by six to split them up into groups. Then we will watch a video
clip to review the different types of animal classifications.
Teacher Directed (15 minutes): I will start by giving the students guided notes by presenting a
PowerPoint on the five types of animal classifications: mammals, birds, amphibians, reptiles,
fish, and insects. Throughout the PowerPoint presentation I will interact with the students and
ask them questions to assess their comprehension on the different types of animals.
Collaborative (15 minutes): The students will start by selecting from a hat one type of animal
classification, they will then research it more in depth. Such as what type of skin, blood, eating
habits, sleeping habits, etc. When they are finished researching their classification they will
present it to the others in their groups. After all of them have presented their animal
classification, they will all take turns picking an animal that would fall under their animal
classification.
Independent Digital Content (15 minutes): Students will test their knowledge by participating in
games on the Classify It! App. This app will require the students to classify different animals
(cat, fish, lizard, snake) into the different types of animals categories (mammals, birds,
amphibians, reptiles, fish, and insects.) https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/classify-it/id911484593?
mt=8
Closure (5 minutes): To close the class, I will require students to play a couple of rounds of
Kahoot, that will review everything that the students discussed in the different stations. Before
leaving class, the students will have to tell me about their favorite type of animal and give me
two characteristics from that animal.
Rationale:
YouTube Video: This YouTube video is titled Animal Classification for Children: Classifying
Vertebrates and Invertebrates for Kids Free School. This video will help engage the student in
the beginning of class and help refresh their memory of the different classifications of animals
before separating into their groups.
Classify It!: This app will the existing knowledge of the students while also give them more
information of animal classification. This app is a great way to teach students the classifications
in a exciting way.
Kahoot: This website will allow me to create an interactive quiz with multiple questions
regarding animal classification. I will be able to see the areas of struggles for the students so that
I know what areas need review.
