Research Background
Anxiety is the inability of individuals to control emotion and freshly between fear and
anxiety (Hyun, 1999), a powerful and overwhelming (Chaplin, 2006) which causes anxiety
irrational (Mcloone, 2006) and discomfort to the individual (Tell, 2010). We often come
across people who are anxiety to communicate, both at work and education. The fear is felt
when someone must follow the group discussions, meetings, and even met with the crowd.
The anxiety to communicate of someone is also found when learns second language
(L2) in school and college, that language is not the mother tongue of that people. The things
like that encountered when students was still studying or have not mastered to use second
language (L2) well, so sometimes apprehension to communicate with others can cause
anxiety in their selves.
Anxiety has received the most attention in SLA research, along with lack of anxiety as
an important component of self-confidence. Anxiety correlates negatively with measures of
Second Language proficiency including grades awarded in foreign language classes, meaning
that higher anxiety tends to go with lower anxiety may be manifested by more risk-taking or
more adventuresome behaviors. Low anxiety and high self-confidence increase student
motivation to learn, and make it more likely that they will use the L2 outside of the classroom
setting. It is therefore not clear whether more successful learning is directly due to lower
anxiety, or to a higher level of motivation and more social interaction. (Muriel Saville-
Troike.2006:90).
In this case, we wrote a small project report that entitled The Anxiety of SLA Male
Students. We investigated the anxiety of SLA male students to communicate using the
questioner that entitled Personal Report of Communication Apprehension (PRCA 24) by
James McCroskey, 1985.

1.3. Methodology
This small research containt data Communication Aprehension(CA) from all males
students of SLA Class in English Department of University of Palangka Raya. The data of
CA were taken from the questioners Personal Report of Communication Apprehension
(PRCA 24) by James McCroskey form that were given to the subjects of this small research.
Mejias et al. (1991) as cited in Tiono and Sylvia(2004: 35) that:
Personal Report of Communication Apprehension (PRCA-24) by McCroskey
et al. (1985) was composed of twenty four statements concerning feelings
about communication with other people and indicated the level of anxiety the
subjects feel about participating in various oral communication situations.
(Tiono and Sylvia, 2004: 35)
The questioners were given to the subjects on Wednesday, November 16 th, 2016 at
03.00 pm. Limited time that was given to collect them was until the next day after the
questioners were given. Then, as the result, there were twelve students used as the subject of
this small research.

1.4. Discussion and Result

From all the subjects(12 males students), the most dominant level of Communication
Apprehension(CA) is low level (50%). For clear description of the level of CA, it can be seen
on the table 1 and the chart 1.

1.5. Conclusion
Based on the result of this small research, communication apprehension of males
students of SLA Class is low level. Low anxiety and high self-confidence increase student
motivation to learn, and make it more likely that they will use the second language outside of
the classroom setting.
