Music is a medium of culture, art, emotion, and ideology between times and
places, which means that the music is varied due to the differences of time and
location
There are 6 main periods in music history, which are Medieval, Renaissance,
Baroque, Classical, Romantic, and Modern period
The characteristics of each era are due to the technology and culture that are
developed

- emphasized melody and bass rather than inner parts
- Blend counterpoint and harmony
- developed Opera, Oratorio, Concerto Grosso
- expressed one mood in a piece

Classical (1750-1820)
- middle class has a huge impact
- era of balance and order (simple and clear harmonic structure)
- developed sonata form
- consist of several movements in composition
- symphonies(for orchestra), string quartets, and solo concerto
- Mozart and Beethoven in this era
Romantic (1820-1900)
- influence of words in music
- emotional, melodic, and expressive
- chromatic harmony (chords containing tones)
- nationalism(national styles) and exoticism (foreign material)
- influence other arts, such as painting, literature, and music drama
Modern (1900-present)
- expanded style and usage of instruments and voice
- electronic music
- jazz, call and response, ragtime, blues, musicals and rock and roll
- complex rhythm
- individual styles
DAY 5 (17/04/2017)
- Research more about special term (such as Motets, Masses, and Madrigals)
- Motets = a short piece of sacred choral music, typically polyphonic and
unaccompanied.
- Masses = can be a cappella, that is, without an independent accompaniment
- Madrigals = a secular vocal music composition, usually a partsong. Traditionally,
polyphonic madrigals are unaccompanied.

> Decided to use piktochart because it has a variety of template that I can use for the
product of self-directed study
