Technology is chaotic and complex. It is difficult to explain and to understand.

Yet nowadays those people in the industrialised world reduce its complexity and see
it as little more than gadgets. Everyone has their own understanding about the word
technology. Before going further, what does technology means actually? Based on
my reading from American Genesis: A century of Invention and Technological
Enthusiasm, Thomas (2004) states that technology is the effort to organise the world
from problem solving so that goods and services can be invented, developed,
produced and used. Through the definition given, can be concluded that technology
brings benefits. Unfortunately, technology rules the world now. In this century, the
improvement of technology changes peoples lives. If people make full use of
technology, then technology will not rule the world but indeed help people ease the
burden in their life. In the other hand, technology helps to solve our problems but it
sometimes also complicates us and makes us feel more burdensome.

Mobile phone is an example of gadget that is invented through the

advancement of technology. Mobile phone undeniably eases the burden but
simultaneously cut the communication in between humans. Communication is the
human connection which is the key to personal and career success. According to
Lorna (2006), faulty communication is the cause of conflict that may lead to
ineffective communication. Based on the citation, it can be concluded that a face to
face communication is very essential in everyone lives. Unluckily, technologies that
are getting more and more advance nowadays are leading to the failure of face to
face communication. Besides, mobile phone also can access internet easily as long
as the place has Wi-Fi. Thus, we can use Global Positioning System (GPS) if we
want to go to the place that we never go. What if the place does not have
connectivity or limited connectivity? It means that we can only access internet based
on the place we go. Based on my own experience, GPS ever get me to the wrong
way and cause me to be late for my interview. It might happen due to the application
in my mobile phone is not updated. So, although mobile phone seems more
convenient but it also cause problems and complicate us sometimes especially when
we do not updated those applications from time to time.

In addition, laptops are also devices that are important in our lives. Laptops
aid us to do work more efficiently. In this day and age, having knowledge about using
laptops in doing works is a necessity especially in the field of education. As a teacher
to be, we must use laptops to do our presentations or even our assignments. With
the development of technology in this present time, we can do our presentation by
using many programmes such as PowerPoint, PowToon, Prezi and many other
programmes. This can help us to save our energy and time. For example, if I teach
the same subject for three classes, I can use the same presentation to teach the
three classes. Oppositely, laptops sometimes also trouble us with some
complications. For instance, if we want to present our presentation, we must have a
liquid crystal display (LCD). That is not a problem but what if suddenly power failure?
How are we going to display our presentation? Moreover, laptops sometime also
suddenly shut down while we are doing our work. Worse than that is when we did not
save our works and it shut down suddenly. All our works might disappear and we
need to redo it again. It is a waste of time and energy.

Subsequently, development of technology in food processing also has its own

pros and cons. Anciently, people process food using handmade and it is more
organic as compared to the food these days which is processed by machines. With
the construction of those factories, unemployment can be reduced because of the
increase of employment opportunities. Furthermore, food that is processed will have
longer life expectancy. This is because food usually is processed to kill bacteria or
other microorganisms. Simultaneously, food processing also removes some of the
nutrients, vitamins and fibre present in the food while food additives such as
colouring, salt from sodium and even calories from refined sugar. Additives such as
sodium from salt will cause people to become obsess in eating processed food. Thus
this will lead to health problems such as diabetes, heart diseases, hypertension and
other chronic diseases. Especially nowadays, people are getting busier thus they do
not have time to cook. This causes them choose to eat those processed food in cans
rather than cook by themselves. Development of food industry also causes air
pollution which will cause skin disease and difficulties in breathing. It is clear that
technology that leads to the development of food industry will bring both advantages
and disadvantages at the same time.

As a conclusion, technology is a good thing and it has its compensations, but

with each technological element we gain disadvantages as well as advantages. Many
times those disadvantages are passed over by technology users. Technology might
be useful for peoples lives and it could also bring complication that will burden
peoples lives. Every technology will cause people feel complicate in different ways. It
only depends on the type of technology and our creativity in using those
technologies. Overall, technology influences every aspect of peoples lives. In this
21st century, technology plays an important role in our lives. Thus, I hope a more
advance world that is full of great technologies and ways to overcome those
complications. In my opinion, I think that in the future it will be more about using our
creativity and being intelligent in doing all those works. Thus, we should improve our
knowledge about those technologies that are getting advance so that we will not be
left behind on the usage of those technologies. According to Kevin (2010),
technology is a living force that can expand our individual potential if we listen to
what it wants.
