Recommendations for lighting and
illumination on airports are given in
Annex 14 ICAO
There are values of 20 lx on aircraft-
positions and 10 lx on ordinary aprons

Since October 2007 there is the new


standard EN 12464-2; Lighting of work
places - outdoor work places
There are several lighting-requirements for
airports:

Em: value below which the average illuminance on the specified surface is not allowed to fall
Uo: ratio of minimum illuminance to average illumunance on a surface
GRl: upper limit of glare by the CIE Glare Rating system
Ra: gives the minimum colour rendering indices for the situation in column 2

This European standard does not specifies


lighting requirements with respect to the safety
and health of workers at work and has not been
prepared in the file of application of Article 137
of the EC treaty, although the lighting
requirements, as specified in this standard,
usually fulfil safety needs
There could be divergences to requirements of
other member states

This german national regulation requires for
Dispatch areas: 30 lx
Embark areas: 20 lx
there is an higher accordance in the ASR to the DIN EN as to
the ICAO
But some areas are not pointed out directly

Hazards because of worse illumination
Stumble and slipping in shades by night
No notice of inadequate dressed ground
staff
Bright and dark areas by GSE headlamps
Hard to detect road markings on ground
Sodium vapour lamps render colour
detection
It is difficult to read labels at containers and
pallets in case of shades
..

Optimization of the existing lighting systems


Additional lighting on GSE
Mobile light poles
regular care and maintenance of existing
facilities
Installing of more light poles where possible
If necessary headlamps for workers to read
labels e.g.

Responsible superior have to realize an risk
assessment
There is a need to measure existing values of
lighting
For a minimum the national requirements
needed to be fulfil
The standard is an advice to comply the safety
and health regulations for workers
