Discipline and Topic: This is a combination lesson of both utilizing mobile devices with modern
technology and learning the English language. Students will scan QR Codes to receive messages
and directions to successfully complete the designed Scavenger Hunt. Students will read, write,
listen, and speak in English.
Target Population: This lesson will be presented to 16 ESL (ENL) adult students in NRS (National
Reporting System) Educational Functioning Level Medium to High Intermediate

Curriculum Links:
What comes prior to this lesson is discussion of adjectives to describe the sunset: spectacular or
wonderful. This gives them more adjectives to then utilize to compliment someone. This lesson
comes after showing them how to download the QR Code Reader onto their cell phones. There will
also be discussion as to who has seen these codes, as well as where they have been seen.
After this lesson, the lesson to follow will involve Students placed in new Teams. In the air of
patriotism, Students will utilize QR Codes and copy True and False statements about George
Washington and Abraham Lincoln in anticipation of Presidents Day. Students will then need to
research on the internet in the Computer Lab which statements are true and which are false.
Objectives:
Students will be able to stay with the team, contribute to the team effort, and will document his/her
participation.
Students will be able to write about the Hunt with clear ideas that reveal an understanding of how to
use the technology.
Student will be able to compliment someone who works behind the scenes to help them.
Student will be able to learn a specific compliment in English.
Student will be able to identify a patriotic American song, and then sing chorally or talk along with it.
2. Knowledge Constructor Students critically curate a variety of resources using digital tools to
construct knowledge, produce creative artifacts and make meaningful learning experiences for
themselves and others. Students:
At the end of the Hunt, they will be directed back to the classroom. Students will be directed to write
their Special Words on the board for all to see. As a total class, they must then determine the order
of each group of Special Words so that when put together, they make sense. Should last 10 minutes.
If students reach road blocks, give clues to look at rhyming words, punctuation marks, and capital
letters. After guessing proper order, students copy all words in notebook in the correct order.
Students also copy name of the writer Katharine Lee Bates, along with the year 1913 when it was
written. Teacher and Students read words chorally.
Then teacher asks about what the Special Words mean. Students share in discussion with their
group for 5 minutes.
Each team takes turns reporting to class the ideas they discussed.
Draw attention to the ies endings of the words skies and majesties do they rhyme? Review the
pronunciations. They do NOT rhyme despite the same spellings.
What are these words? A poem? A song? What does Patriotic mean? (expressing devotion to and
strong support for ones country) Why is it a patriotic song? (It describes ones love for their home
country)
Day Two
Students return to their groups from the day prior. Again view the song from yesterday to refresh their
memories. Then they will discuss what they did yesterday in class regarding the QR Code Scavenger
Hunt and how the technology on the mobile device helped them learn a patriotic song. Students
need to include how the technology works. In other words, what had to be done to successfully
complete the Scavenger Hunt? They will be encouraged to take notes individually. They should also
discuss the person to whom they gave the compliment, and what they said to her. After 10 minutes of
discussion, students then return to their individual seats and write about what they just discussed.
Teacher walks around the room to help as needed. When done, students then read their work to the
class.
Teacher then distributes page entitled QR Code Scavenger Hunt - Day 2. Students complete
individually, and pages are collected when done.
At the end of day twos lesson, students will anonymously write their opinion about the lesson, and
any problems encountered during the Hunt. Was the lesson good, bad, or ugly? How can it be
changed to be understood easier or made clearer?
Supplemental Materials:
Pages of QR Codes entitled QR Codes Team Yellow (before taping pages in place, cut off tops of
pages with information of where to place each code)
Pages of QR Codes entitled QR Codes Team Pink
Pages of QR Codes entitled QR Codes Team Blue
Pages of QR Codes entitled QR Codes Team Green
Two sided top page (Upon which to write Special Words)
Page entitled QR Codes to Reveal a Secret Song - Rubric for Students
Page entitled QR Code Scavenger Hunt - Day 2
Evaluation of Students:
One way to determine whether or not the lesson was successful is if all teams return in a reasonable
amount of time (15 to 20 minutes) without getting hung up anywhere or on any part of the Scavenger
Hunt.
Another way to judge the lesson is to listen to their explanations when they individually share-out
about the Scavenger Hunt and the role the technology played.
Lastly, if the class scored lower than 80% receiving 15 points each on the rubric, then I would need to
analyze what areas need to be better designed or assessed, as well as take into consideration their
anonymous opinions about the lesson.
With a class score of at least 80%, this should successfully prepare students for the next lesson that
involves reading different QR Codes providing information. Students are to then take this information
and research whether it is true or false.
