CORE I3 1
1. INTRODUCTION

The Department of Occupational Safety and Health requires employers to evaluate the
workplace to determine if hazards require the use of personal protective equipment.

Employers should select and require the use of adequate PPE to protect workers from
actual and potential hazards. Based on a hazard assessment or work safety analysis,
the employer can select the PPE that best protects its employees. Although the
employee owns the PPE, the employer will be responsible for ensuring that the PPE
receives proper maintenance and cleaning.

2. OBJECTIVE

To promote the development of a culture of prevention in occupational health and

safety, knowing the characteristics of personal protection equipment and its correct use
which allows to manage the occupational risks in order to ensure the prevention of
accidents and diseases

They are devices, materials and personal clothing intended for each worker to protect
him from one or several risks present at work and that may threaten his safety and
health. PPEs are a temporary and complementary alternative to preventive measures
of a collective nature.

3. CONTENT

PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT (PPE)

PPEs include all devices, accessories, and clothing of various designs employed by the
worker to protect against injury.
Personal protective equipment (PPE) is one of the most basic safety concepts in the
workplace and is necessary when hazards have not been completely eliminated or
controlled by other means such as: Engineering Controls
Classification of PPEs

i. Protection of the Head (skull).

ii. Protection of Eyes and Face.
iii. Ear Protection.
iv. Protection of the Respiratory Tract.
v. Protection of hands and arms.
vi. Protection of Feet and Legs.
vii. Protective clothes.

1. PROTECTION OF THE HEAD.

Safety helmets provide protection against impact and penetration of objects that
fall on the head.
Safety helmets can also protect against electric shock and burns.
The protective helmet should not be dropped from the head during work
activities, to avoid this can be used a strap
attached to the jaw.
It is necessary to periodically inspect it for
cracks or damage that may reduce the degree
of protection offered.

2. PROTECCION DE CARA Y OJOS

They are elements designed for the protection of the eyes, and within these we find:

Against particle protection.

Against liquids, fumes, vapors and gases
Against radiation.:

2.2. Face Protection:
They are elements designed for the protection of the eyes and face, within these we
have:

Masks with protective lenses (welder's masks) are formed of a mask provided
with lenses to filter ultraviolet and infrared rays.
Facial protectors allow protection against
particles and other foreign bodies. They can be made
of transparent plastic, tempered glass or metal
grille.

3. PROTECTION OF THE EARS.
When the noise level exceeds 85 decibels, which is
considered the upper limit for normal hearing, it is
necessary to provide hearing protection to the worker.
Hearing protectors can be: rubber earplugs or
earmuffs (headphones).
Plugs are elements that are inserted into the external
auditory canal and remain in position without any
special clamping device.
Earmuffs are semi-spherical plastic elements, filled Figure 4. Auditive Protectors
with noise absorbers (porous material), which are held by a fastening band
around the head.

4. RESPIRATORY PROTECTION.
No respirator is able to prevent the entry of all air pollutants into the user's
breathing area. Respirators help to protect against certain airborne
contaminants by reducing concentrations in the breathing zone
below the TLV or other recommended exposure
levels. Improper use of the respirator may result in
overexposure to contaminants causing illness or
death.

5. PROTECCIN DE MANOS Y BRAZOS.
The gloves that are given to workers, will be selected according to the risks to
which the user is exposed and the need for
free movement of the fingers.
The gloves should be of the appropriate size
and kept in good condition.
Gloves should not be used to work with or
near moving or rotating machinery.
Gloves that are torn, torn or impregnated with
chemical materials should not be used.

6. PROTECTION OF FEET AND LEGS
Security shoes

Safety footwear should protect workers' feet against moisture and hot
substances, against rough surfaces, against treads on sharp and
sharp objects and against falling objects, and should also
protect against electrical risk.

Figure 7. Safety Shoe

Types of footwear:

For work where there is a risk of falling hard objects such as metal ingots, irons,
etc., you must equip yourself with leather footwear with a metal toe cap.
For electrical work the footwear must be of leather without any metallic part, the
sole must be of an insulating material.
Rubber boots with non-slip soles will be used for wet jobs.
For work with molten metals or hot liquids, the footwear will fit to the foot and
ankle to prevent entry of these materials through the grooves.
In order to protect the legs against splashing of molten metals, safety leggings
must be fitted, which must be heat-resistant.

PROTECTIVE CLOTHES.

CORE I3 5
Is the special clothing that must be used as protection against
certain specific risks and especially against the handling of
caustic or corrosive substances and that do not protect
the ordinary clothes of work.

Type of protective clothing

Protective clothing for workers exposed to corrosive

substances or other harmful substances shall be
made of rubber or rubber.
For function work, they are provided with asbestos
suits or aprons and lately they use aluminized cotton
suits that refracts the heat.
For work on equipment that emits radiation (x-rays), lead
handles are used

4. VOCABULARY

o PROTECTOR: A piece or object that covers and protects the parts of the body
most exposed to shocks.
o THREATENING: It is a danger that can happen at some point
o CLOTHING: A person's clothing for adornment or coat of his body.
o RISK: Possibility of a setback or misfortune, that someone or something suffer
damage
o FUSED MATERIALS: Process for the manufacture of pieces, usually metallic
but also of plastic, consisting of melting a material and introducing it into a
cavity
o INSPECT: Look closely at a thing or place

5. CONCLUSIONS
