were rather elusive. In other words, many women had little
or no sexual desire for no apparent reason.
However, the Chicago researchers based this conclusion
on the male model of sex, the one that says sexual desire pre-
cedes arousal. But according to Bassons research, for many
women, desire does not precede arousal at all but, rather, re-
sults from it. Women, Basson writes, often begin sexual
experiences from a state of sexual neutrality. But as things
heat up, so do they.
The idea that libido is often the product of good sex turns
conventional notions of desire upside down. If a substantial
proportion of women dont experience desire before becom-
ing sexual, then drugs and supplements that try to pique it
before the fact may be a waste of money.
This new concept of womens desire neatly explains why

How can parents halt the creeping

THE SOLUTION: Change the environment

weve created the fattest generation in history.
Waistlines are widening in people of all ages, but our children, in particular, are gaining
weight to a dangerous degree and at an alarming rate, warns the Institute of Medicine of
Washington, DC, in a new action plan (Preventing Childhood Obesity: Health in the Balance)
commissioned by Congress to address this growing
public health threat. In just 30 years, the prevalence
of childhood obesity has soared, with nearly one in
three American kids now tipping the scales past
healthy weight.
Once dismissed as harmless baby fat, childhood
obesity is increasingly recognized as a serious health
threat that can lead to numerous physical ailments such
as type 2 diabetes. In fact, one-fourth of obese kids ages
5 to 10 already have at least two components of what is
called metabolic syndrome, a cluster of health problems
(including insulin resistance, high blood pressure and
high cholesterol) that increases the risk of coronary heart
disease and diabetes. Overweight kids also are more
likely to be ostracized and bulliedor to bully others.
The grim reality is that obesity exerts a life-shortening
effect, which threatens to reverse the steady rise in life
expectancy observed in the modern era, contends a recent study published in The New England
Journal of Medicine. Todays children are on track to be the first generation in U.S. history to live less
healthy, and even shorter, lives than their parents.
How did we get this way? Increasingly, experts point to our obesogenic environment, which
encourages people to eat too much and move too little.
We live in a world where the energy demands of daily living are at a historic low and the
availability of high-calorie, easily obtainable, inexpensive food is at a historic high, notes Harold Kohl,
an epidemiologist with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta. Weve created
the perfect storm for obesityparticularly for children.

Make it a family affair
Everyone in the familyincluding siblings and grandparents
should be encouraged to eat right and exercise to successfully
combat childhood obesity. According to William Strong,
MD, emeritus professor of pediatrics and cardiology at the
Medical College of Georgia in Augusta, If you tell a child
to be active and eat better and the family isnt doing it too,
its a set-up for failure. Instead of sitting on the bench at the
playground, get up and play with your kids. Roll a ball back
and forth, take walks and, if your child is old enough and
interested, take an active class together, such as martial arts
or yoga. To make time for physical activity, he says, parents
should reduce screen time (TV and video games) to less than
two hours per day.
Sadly, some children are active only about 10 minutes a

hen breast cancer patient Gail Van Dyke heard the news that
she needed chemotherapy, she was devastated. While lying in
her hospital bed at Marin General Hospital in Greenbrae, Calif.,
a chaplain came to visit and told Van Dyke how a technique called guided
imagery could help her deal with any fears surrounding the treatment. Soon
she began one-on-one guided sessions with the chaplainalso a trained im-

Van Dyke. A few years back, after a directive from hospital
administrators to humanize medicine, Davenport secured
funding for guided imagery to control pain, deal with anxiety,
manage nausea and strengthen the immune system. As the
demand grew, she eventually developed an internship pro-
gram for students. Today, the Health and Healing Center has
a yearlong training program and a team of eight students who
specialize in imagery.
And as others begin to hear of guided imagerys successes,
more and more people call existing programs for advice;
Davenport gets so many inquiries that the center has set up a
consultation service to help other institutions get programs
started on their own turf.
Going mainstream
Until recently, nurses, social workers and pastors have been
the champions of imagerys cause. We are still in a stage
where most doctors arent aware of the research, Rossman
says, partly because there hasnt been a product to sell. If
a drug company had a pill for what guided imagery did in
surgery, they wouldve put $40 million into an advertising
campaign.

>>> Our take: This convenient tabletop distiller packs a powerful purify-
ing punch and is a great way to avoid the hassle of installing a perma-
nent fixture in your kitchen. Consider the money youll save over the long
term compared to buying bottled water as a plus for your pocketbook. A few caveats: For impatient thirsty types, the four-
hour wait for 1 gallon of purified water could be frustrating. Also, due to the loss of minerals, the taste can be slightly flat.
