Elevator Design Criteria:

Codes:

2007 CBC Title 8 and Title 24, with Erratas and Emergency Supplements
ASCE 7-05
ASME 17.1-96

Load and Deflection Criteria for Rail Backup Verticals and Horizontal Divider

Operation:
Strength Check
Load for Strength Check: Provide by manufacturer
Deflection Check
Load for Deflection Check: Provide by manufacturer
Deflection Criteria: 1/8 cumulative (vertical and horizontal support)

Seismic:
Reference Section: CBC 1614A.1.16
Strength Check
Load for Strength Check: Per ASCE 7 13.6.10.1 with 0.5g minimum.
ap: 1.0 per Table 13.6-1
Rp: 2.5 per Table 13.6-1
Ip: 1.5
Sds: 1.133
Fp = 0.4*ap*Sds/(Rp/Ip)*(1+2*z/h)*Wp = 0.816Wp @ z/h = 1
Fp min = 0.3Sds*Ip*Wp = 0.51Wp
Fp max = 1.6Sds*Ip*Wp = 2.72Wp

Weight used: a) Weight of Counterweight or b) Max weight of car plus

40% of rated capacity. NOTE: Structural supports Fp forces will be added to the
Elevator horizontal seismic forces.

Deflection Check
Load for Deflection Check: Provided by manufacturer (0.5g minimum
horizontal acceleration)

Weight used: Manufacturer calculation. Used in providing 0.5g load on

cut sheet. NOTE: Structural supports Fp forces will be added to the Elevator
horizontal seismic forces.

Deflection Criteria: Most stringent requirement of Table Per CBC

1614A.1.16 and Title 8 (ASME 17.1-96) was used for cumulative (vertical and
horizontal support) maximum deflection in order to meet both code requirements
simultaneously. Deflections checked in most adverse position.
