Maths: Algebra

When a number is unknown, a letter is used to

represent it. This is called a variable. It can make up
algebraic expressions and formulas. These are called
algebraic terms for example: 2y + 3y . When a letter is
right next to a number you have to multiply them so 2y
=2xy

How to simplify equations: 2y+3y+5x

Look for the same letter

Add the numbers next to the same variable
So the simplest form is 5y+ 5x

Tips:

When it says a x a it doesnt equal 2a. It equals a

squared
Always multiply, not add or divide the variable and
the number
Use inverse to check your answers

How to find out a variable: 2y = 30

The equation means 2 multiplied by something

gives you 30
Divide 30 by 2
The answer is 15 so y = 15

Expanding brackets: 2(x + 12)

When there are brackets, you must multiply

So you do 2 x x = 2x
Then you do 2 x 12 = 24
So the answer is 2x +n 24
