1/1 Question 1
Fossils of Lystrosaurus, an early land-dwelling reptile, have been found in Antarctica, India, and South Africa. The
distribution of these fossils suggests that these areas were once _____ .
a. home to a wide variety of organisms

b. made of the same chemical elements

c. connected to one another

d. covered by oceanic crust

1/1 Question 2
Which of the following is most likely to occur at a transform boundary?

a. earthquakes

b. volcanoes

c. mountain formation

d. all of the above

2/2 Question 3
Describe subduction AND identify the type of plate boundary where subduction occurs. (2 points)

Subduction is when a low-density plate slides over top a higher density plate. Here a trench is formed and the higher
density plate that was pulled back down into the mantle starts melting back into mantle material. Magma from that
mantle material can then shoot back up through the subduction zone and form volcanoes. All of these processes occur
at a convergent plate boundary.

1/1 Question 4
Plate tectonics refers to the theory that _____ .
a. each of the continents on the earth is also called a plate.

b. the surface of the earth is made up of large plates that have moved over time.

c. the continents float on the oceans like plates.

d. the surface of the earth is made of large plates that cannot move.

4/4 Question 5
(4 points) Define the theory of plate tectonics AND explain how each one of the following is related to plate tectonics:

earthquakes
volcanoes
mountain formation

HINT: You should explain each of the events listed above separately.

The theory of plate tectonics is a theory that the Earth is made up of large plates that have moved slowly over
geological time. Earthquakes are related to plate tectonics because at each type of plate boundary when the plates
shift, as the theory of plate tectonics states, they cause rock, to break underground and energy to be released.
Volcanoes are related to the theory of plate tectonics because when the plates shift at an oceanic convergent or
divergent boundary, magma is released to the surface and volcanoes are formed. Mountain formation is related to the
theory of plate tectonics because when the plates shift at a convergent boundary, continental crust pushes together

and force upward to form fold mountains and at an oceanic lithosphere convergent boundary as well as a divergent
boundary, magma is released back up to the surface to form volcanic mountains.

1/1 Question 6
Which of the following statements provides evidence for plate tectonics?
a. The same kind of unusual fossils are found in South America and Africa.

b. The same kind of unusual rock layers are found in North America, Europe, and Africa.

c. The earth's continents are moving at a rate of centimeters per year.

d. All of the above.

1/1 Question 7
Use the diagram below to answer the following question:

The motion of the convection currents in the mantle beneath the Atlantic Ocean appears to be mainly makeing the ocean

a. wider

b. deeper

c. narrower

d. shallower

1/1 Question 8
The diagram below shows an enlargement of the mid-Atlantic ridge and surrounding area in its position with respect to
the continents. Magnetic polarity bands of igneous rock parallel to the ridge are illustrated according to the key.

1/1 Question 9
Continental drift is the idea that _____ .
a. objects that fall into the ocean drift between continents.

b. the continents are the only solid surface on earth.

c. ocean waves push the continents over the surface of the earth.

d. the continents were once joined together to form a large land mass.
