2 : Reactions of Metals with Non-metals

Metals and Non-metals
Elements are
classified into
metals and non-
metals
eg. of non-metals:
Carbon,
phosphorus,
sulphur, oxygen &
hydrogen
Metals react with
non-metals to form
compounds
Active metals react
more vigorously
than less active
metals with non-
metals

6.2 : Reactions of Metals with Non-metals
Reaction of Metals with Sulphur
Most metals react with sulphur to form metal
sulphides this explains why there are so
many types of sulphides in the Earths crust
Energy is released when metals react with
sulphur
Active metals react more vigorously than
less active metals with sulphur to form metal
sulphide

6.2 : Reactions of Metals with Non-metals
Reaction of Metals with Oxygen
Most metals react with oxygen to form metal
oxides
The Earths crust contains many metal oxides
Energy is released during the reaction
Different metals react with oxygen at
different rates
