All surfaces in this room feature the same fibre cement pa-
nels, including the ceiling and the floor. The panels have
been sealed with clear varnish and fixed inconspicuously.
There is nothing to disturb this puzzle composition. Al
though there is no door furniture in sight, some of those
fibre cement surfaces will open and reveal quite conven-
tional filing cabinets behind what seems to be plain wall
cladding.

The white metal shelves are complemented by a four metre
long sideboard which is clad with fibre cement panels.
Recessed grips obviate the need for visible door furniture.
The same material has been used for the tables, where
light grey fibre cement panels have been fixed to steel
support frames.

An extract from a text by the Baupiloten team that hel-

ped create this child-friendly school around images of
dragons and other fabled creatures explains:
We puff and pant for sheer exuberance. We puff and pant
with exertion. We puff out of weakness or with anger. As
we see it, puffing and panting is a manifestation of all-
embracing human feelings and as such an expression of
living and learning in a school all day long. In the Erika
Mann Primary School there is a silver dragon that puffs,
and it leaves a trail.
The seats and tables in the school corridor are made up of

five different modules which can be combined in various
ways. All items are fixed to the floor or the wall except
for tables and benches. The surfaces of these wooden
structures are fibre cement panels, partly lined with non-
combustible textiles.

Die Sitz- und Tischlandschaft im Schulflur besteht aus

fnf verschiedenen Modulen, die unterschiedlich mitein-

Tisch und Bank, sind fest mit Boden und Wand verbun-
den. Die Oberflchen der Holzelemente bestehen aus Fa-
serzementtafeln und sind zum Teil mit nicht brennbaren
Textilien belegt.

The rooms of the four crosswise positioned wings are all

accessed from the central hub. The walls are clad with
fibre cement panels. The material, the different colours
and the use of skylights all combine to help dementia
sufferers find their way around when they are out of their
own rooms and to provide a pleasant meeting place. Ori-
entation as a function of building design also ensures that
the occupants will be guided back to their rooms when
coming from outside.

The fronts of several checkout desks along one side of this

shoe showroom have been lined with fibre cement panels.
The same material has been used also for the shelving
where a wide range of models is on display. The fibre
cement panels lining the upright support slabs have been
screwed onto subframes and their screw-heads have been
concealed with decorative caps.
