Working for a Better Life

Do you find easier ways to do certain tasks? Or have the idea of achieving maximum

efficiency in anything? Students are always confused on what major is best for them, so why not

explore a complex one with multiple branches. Mechanical Engineering is a great idea for those

into logic and theory, and doesnt necessary involve you building something by yourself. In

Mechanical Engineering, you can either be in charge of making the designs, building them, or

simply supervising them. If youre into alterations or any new innovations, Mechanical

Engineering is the best major for you because you get to work both by yourself or with your

peers, gain skills that can be used outside the work environment, and can help you universally

join any of the engineering fields.

Of course, in order to participate in the school training, you must have an exposure to the

type of work you will be doing. A main prerequisite is to at least understand proficient math

skills such as Algebra and Calculus as later on you will be taking Calculus III. The second one

will be the proficiency of sciences, which will help you understand why certain ideas just wont

work or why your prototype is doing certain actions. The main sciences needed to understand are

Chemistry, for making sure your prototype doesnt combust, and Physics, since mechanical

devices always need so many components connected to each other to make it move. In order to

save time, you must take advance placement tests prior to your collegiate career to have the

credentials needed. Any college should have Mechanical Engineering as a major choice, however

not all of them require the same prerequisites. An optional requirement is interning in any

corporation as this is where you can get your exposure of the work environment to expect in the

future.

Through interning, you and others will be able to see the values everyone possess. These

values can include your organization, work performance, and communication skills. Another

factor that will be checked on, is your attitude towards work, which is vital for your performance

and your whole groups as well. These are some of the basic skills that will be required in the

working field, but higher occupations will expect a longer list of assets for credibility.

Groups will always be made to progress in a project most effectively. This being said,

you will start to explore a group environment during school in order to give you an insight on

other cultures and people. No discrimination should be seen in these group meetings as you are

all focused on completing each others roles within a certain time frame. When having group

projects, not only will the end product be expected, but the groups decisions and layouts of the

process. This will involve certain charts used in engineering to portray their goal, which means it

will be another group members duty to do so. Engineering does not only involve designing,

there are many more tasks such as the group leader, liaison, and an inspector. Many more can be

used, depends on the projects goal.

The classwork will involve many subjects of both math and science, as thats what makes

up engineering. Its not the only subjects needed however, as you must be literate enough to

submit professional assignments. Besides the arithmetic, many of the assignments will be turned

in through computers and even involve the use of Microsoft Excel and Computer Aided Designs.

The tests involve the use of conversions, scientific theories, and even situations that need ethical

approval. This will prepare you of what is to come from any of the work fields. A great school

for Mechanical Engineering is the Massachusettss Institute of Technology, however only a few

are able to attend the school due to its 7.9% acceptance rate.

After obtaining your Bachelors degree, you are able to work on you professional

engineering license which will give you even more credential. Then obviously, you can further

your skills by going for a Masters degree, which will really help you financially and even give

you an easier job. The lifestyle youll be living will be much like the school work I previously

mentioned. You will have a group with different members with various assignments. Each of you

will work until everybody is complete with their assigned role, or you will continue to work with

each other until the whole project is done. This of course, is more important than turning in a

final, however since you and your group members job are on the line, so the group must always

be full of ambition.

Many of these roles consist of mechanical engineers, drafting engineer, head of design,

applications technician, engineering manager, sales engineer, and systems engineer. They may

sound the same but each is very unique for the product outcome can be done as safely and

quickly as possible. Drafting is more for those visualizers that are able to paint a picture inside

their heads and express it on a paper. While the designers are the ones giving the drafters the

ideas and how it should physically look. The application technician is there to show the designers

how certain things will not be possible or how they will make the product to look given certain

parameters. The systems engineer is a bit like the technician only they arent hands-on, theyre

more focused on the whole design of the system and its purpose. The sales engineer is obviously

in charge of all the investments, costs, and the sales on the product. Although these are very

different occupations, theyre all necessary for a product to be made most efficiently. Mechanical

Engineering can help you branch out to many other fields that doesnt involve you to actually be

hands-on with tools and products. The median pay of the jobs listed is $84,190 annually. This

can change however, due to your task, credentials, and the work needed.
Ramirez 4

In conclusion, mechanical engineering is a great career for finding out what skills you

can master. Such as me, for example, I chose this major due to my hands-on abilities and my

love for math and physics, but once you take a college class you will see the competency you

have with your peers. I saw this first-hand on the first day of my mechanical engineering class.

When doing icebreakers, I found out that my other classmates already have jobs as a mechanic or

have done projects on their own, such as, making a watch. Finding this out I did not ditch my

major over anothers experience, rather I got curious and eager to learn more about anything

when it comes to mechanics. I frequently ask questions on how things work and often provide

any support that I can offer to others. Ultimately, you want to have more credentials, experience,

or ability to outperform others in order to achieve the job of your dreams.
