PE 09 403-THEORY OF MACHINES
Time : Three Hours Maximum : 70 Marks
Part A
Answer all questions.
1. In what way a mechanism differ from a machine ?
2. What do you understand by the term 'interference' as applied to gears ?
3. Why is a roller follower preferred to that of a knife-edged follower ?
4. How does the velocity ratio of a belt drive effect, when some slip is taking place between the belt
and the two pulleys ?
5. What are the causes and effects ofvibrations?
(5 x 2 = 10 marks)
PartB
Answer any four out of six.
6. What is a machine ? Giving example, differentiate between a Machine and a Structure.
7. What is the significance of degrees of freedom of a kinematic chain when it functions as a
mechanism ? Give examples.
8. State and prove the law of gearing. Show that involute profile satisfies the conditions for correct
gearing.
9. Explain the term 'Logarithmic decrement' as applied to damped vibrations.
10. What is centrifugal tension in a belt? How does it affect the power transmitted? Explain.
11. Discuss the effect of inertia of the shaft in longitudinal and transverse vibrations.

(b) The crank of a slider crank mechanism rotates clockwise at a constant speed of 300 r.p.m.
The crank is 150 mm and the connecting rod is 600 mm long. Determine : 1. Linear velocity
and acceleration of the midpoint of the connecting rod, and 2. angular velocity and angular
acceleration of the connecting rod, at a crank angle of 45 from inner dead centre position.
(10 marks)
13. (a) In a spiral gear drive connecting two shafts, the approximate centre distance is 400 mm and
the speed ratio = 3. The angle between the two shafts is 50 and the normal pitch is 18 mm.
The spiral angle for the driving and driven wheels are equal. Find : 1. Number of teeth on
each wheel, ~ Exact centre distance, and 3. Efficiency of the drive, if friction angle =6.

(b) Two mating gears have 20 and 40 involute teeth of module 10 mm and 20 pressure angle.
The addendum on each wheel is to be made of such a length that the line of contact on each
side of the pitch point has half the maximum possible length. Determine the addendum height
for each gear wheel, length of the path of contact, arc of contact and contact ratio.

14. (a) (i) Explain briefly the different types of cams and followers. (4 marks)
(ii) A disc cam is to give uniform motion to a knife edge follower during out stroke of 50 mm
during the first half of the cam revolution. The follower again returns to its original position
with uniform motion during the next half of the revolution. The minimum radius of the
cam is 50 mm and the diameter of the cam shaft is 35 mm. Draw the profile of the cam
when (i) The axis of follower passes through the axis of cam shaft, and (ii) The axis of
follower is offset by 20 mm from the axis of the cam shaft.

(b) (i) An open belt 100 mm wide connects two pulleys mounted on parallel shafts with their
centres 2.4 m apart. The diameter of the larger pulley is 450 mm and that of the smaller
pulley 300 mm. The coefficient of friction between the belt and the pulley is 0.3 and the
maximum stress in the belt is limited to 14 N/mm width. If the larger pulley rotates at
120 r.p.m., find the maximum power that can be transmitted.
(6 marks)
(ii) Discuss briefly the various types of belts used for the transmission of power. (4 marks)
15. (a) (i) A shaft of 100 mm diameter and 1 metre long is fixed at one end and other end carries a
flywheel of mass 1 tonne. Taking Young's modulus for the shaft material as 200 GN/m2 .
