MAM1004F - Tutorial 4

Work in groups of three to five and listen to each other. You will learn more from your peers than anyone else.
Ask for help! If youre stuck put up your hand to call over a tutor. Be ready to explain what youve already tried.
The tutors will not give you a complete solution, but they will push you in the right direction.
You dont need to hand anything in, but if you dont finish the tutorial now, work through it at home and finish it
before next weeks tutorial. Dont let the work pile up it becomes very difficult to catch up
Working with Logarithms and Exponentials

1. Solve the following expressions for x. Dont use your calculator.

(a) 52x+1 = 125
(b) log3 (x) = log6 (4) + log6 (54)
(c) log2 (6x ) log2 (24x ) = log2 (32)
x
(d) 23 = 512
(e) log5 (x) = log7 (2x) log25 (x)
2. In class you saw the change of base rule for logarithms
logb (x)
loga (x) = .
logb (a)
Prove that this is true.
Hint - let loga (x) = p then multiply both sides by logb (a) to start off.
3. For what values of x is log10 (x2 ) = 2 log10 (x)?
4. Find the inverses of the following functions if they exist or explain why the function cannot be inverted.
(a) f (x) = e2x+1
(b) g(x) = log2 (x2 + 1)
2
(c) h(x) = 3x +2x+1
; x > 1
(d) p(x) = 2 ln(5x) + 3; x > 0

More Rational Functions

x2 + 2x + 1
5. Sketch f (x) = .
x2 + x 2
Dont know where to start? Look at last weeks tutorial.

More Discrete Dynamical Systems

6. For each system below, find x1 , x2 and x3 by direct calculation. Identify any fixed points and decide if they are stable
or unstable. Draw a cobweb diagram. Give a formula for the general solution to the system and use it to calculate
x10 .
(a) xn+1 = 45 xn + 9, x0 = 7.
(b) xn+1 = xn 3, x0 = 2.
(c) xn+1 = 1.5xn + 2, x0 = 1.

More Modelling

7. Let the function d(t) be the total distance youve travelled since you last woke up (hopefully it was earlier this morning
in time for the lecture). What is the range and domain of d(t)?
Sketch this function. Is it increasing or decreasing? Explain your answer.
Is the function d(t) invertible? Justify your answer, and find d1 (1km) if possible.

8. Several different formulas have been proposed for determining the appropriate dosage of a drug for a child from the
adult dosage. Suppose that A is the adult dosage of a particular drug and N is the age of the child. The Cowlings
rule says that the child dosage should be
N +1
C= A
24
and Frieds rule says that the child dosage should be
2N A
C= .
25
(a) An adult dosage of ibuprofen is 300mg. What are the child dosages these rules suggest for an 11 year old?
(b) Sketch these two rules for a fixed dose of 300mg. What are the inputs (xaxis) and outputs (yaxis)?
(c) At what age do the rules suggest the same dosage? For what ages is the dosage suggested by Frieds rule larger?
9. A cold drink is taken out of the fridge on a hot day. Newtons law of cooling says that the temperature of the drink
will be described by a function
T (t) = 35 Aekt
where A and k are constants to be determined.

(a) The drink was originally at 3 degrees Celcius. After 10 minutes it was 20 degrees Celcius. Find A and k.
(b) Sketch the graph. What happens as time passes?
(c) What will the temperature be after 30 minutes?
(d) How long will it take before the drink is at 30 degrees Celcius?

10. A factory discharges 15000 litres of waste into a lake each week. Each week 20% of the waste in the lake is metabolised
by algae and rendered harmless. The lake is initially unpolluted.
(a) Write down a dynamical system that models this situation.
(b) How much waste is present in the lake after 12 weeks?
(c) After 12 weeks the factory manager decides to reduce the discharge so that the factory can pass an enviromental
inspection in another 4 weeks time. The lake has to contain 40000 litres of waste or less for the factory to pass.
What is the maximum amount of waste the factory can discharge each week and still pass?
