Competency of Focus: Competency #2- Communication

To pilot teaching/learning situations that are appropriate to the students concerned

and to the subject content with a view to developing the competencies targeted in
the program of study.

Goal #1

To pilot lessons in the center of excellence using principles of UDL (Universal Design
for Learning) that are appropriate for each of the learners in the special needs
classroom while allowing each student to obtain the same success criteria while
offering and supporting multiple modalities to explore the big ideas and express
their level of understanding.

Strategies

- Read articles for suggestions on how to integrate principles of UDL into a

special needs classroom.
- Create a classroom profile outlining individual students learning profiles
(needs and strengths) to help define appropriate both long term and short
term goals.
- Ensure that there are flexible options for means of representation, means
of action and expression and means of engagement.
- Use a system for students to track whether or not they have achieved the
learning goal using short success criteria (I can make and describe an
imprint fossil) and a simply sticker once the goal has been achieved)
- Ensure that the flexible options do not drastically increase the prep time, as
to ensure that the integration of the UDL principles is as smooth and
natural as possible.
- Record the modalities chosen by students and encourage the exploration of
multiple modalities in lessons leading up to the culminating task.

Competency of Focus: #6
To plan, organize and supervise a class in such a way as to promote students
learning and social development.

Goal #2

To ensure the consistency of the strategies that are in place to address and monitor
student behavior in the classroom and to facilitate an open line of communication
with parents, administration and colleagues.

Strategies

- Regularly use the application class dojo to track both students positive and
negative contributions to the classroom and encourage students and
parents to check their progress using the application.
- Pick one day of the cycle that will be used for detentions for missing work,
unjustified lates, attitude and English speaking in the French immersion
classes. Keep a list of students who are expected to arrive and make sure it
is written in their agendas.
- Use warning cards to give a silent signal to students that their behavior is
unsatisfactory and needs to change. Students will then return the card
when it is quite and explain why believe they received the card.
- Prepare a document containing the emails/ phone numbers of parents in
each class and inform students that parents will be informed of any
misbehavior in the classroom.
- Use ISM to track behavior issues in the system as to create a record of
issues occurring within the classroom and additionally in the hall ways.
