In Voi che sapete,
Flute Partita in A Minor (after 1723?)
Written in four movements, the Flute Partita
was originally titled Solo pour une flute traverse
in the manuscript. The exact date of composition
is unknown, but Bach probably composed the
work during his Cthen period, from which come
many other purely instrumental works, such as
the Brandenburg Concertos. The piece is a French
dance suite composed of four typical Baroque
dance movements. The first of which, the
Allemande, refers to a German duple-meter
dance.
Sonata for Oboe and Piano (1947)
Henri Dutilleux followed in the tradition of
the great French composers before him, such as
Ravel, Debussy, and Messiaen. However, he
refused to be associated with any particular
school of composing and chose to form his own
independent style. After numbering his Piano
Sonata as Op. 1, Dutilleux claimed all works
written before Op. 1 (including the Oboe Sonata)
do not represent his mature composing voice and
therefore renounced them.
The Oboe Sonata was composed for the Paris
Conservatoire Concours in 1947; he regretted
writing the piece so hastily and particularly
disliked the levity of the third movement.

La ci darem la mano from Don Giovanni (1787)
The enduring popularity of Mozarts operas
has lead to many transciptions of the arias. These
two come from a series of flute duets edited for
Cherubino, a teenager discovering love, implores
the Countess and Susanna to tell him if the
strange feelings he has is love. In La ci darem la
mano, Don Giovanni seduces the newly married
Zerlina who at first refuses and then succumbs.

Hungarian composer and conductor, Antal
Dorati wrote two pieces for Heinz Holliger: Duo
Concertante and Cinq Pieces. While the Duo
Concertante is very Hungarian in character, the
Cinq Pieces present five short, unrelated character
pieces. Some of the titles are programmatic but
Dorati didnt leave a program.
I. La Cigale et la fourmie (daprs
Lafontaine)
A popular childrens tale, Dorati depicts the
conversation between the Grasshopper and the
Ant. Using large leaps, he depicts the Grasshopper
who spent all summer singing and not harvesting
food. The Ant is shown through step-wise
chromatic lines, who chides the Grasshopper for
not preparing for the winter.
II. Lettre dAmour
While Dorati didnt provide a love letter to
reference in writing this movement, the letter
seems panged with torture, perhaps from
unrequited love and process of coming to terms
with ones feelings.
III. Fugue trois voix
Dorati writes a fugue in three voices played by
one person. He differentiates each voice through
stark dynamic contrast and articulation.
IV. Berceuse
French for lullaby, Dorati writes a soothing
pentatonic lullaby for muted oboe.
V. Lgerdemain
For the last piece, Dorati writes Sleight of Hand.
In two parts, he starts with Le spiel to imitate a
magician intriguing the audience with his talk. The
second part, Le trick uses a twelve-tone row to
astonish us as he turns G into F sharp. After many
twists and turns, voila, the trick is done.
