I-Search Reflection

At first, being an elementary school teacher seemed like the worst job that I could

ever go for. All those energetic kids running around, teaching them how to be respectful

and teaching them to do math? No thank you. However, when I started to babysit more

and more I realized that teaching children, and seeing their faces light up when they get

something right is one of the most rewarding things I could ever ask for. At my ballet

studio, sometimes I teach the little five-year old girls how to do the simple steps in ballet

and I love it when they get the pure joy on their faces when something is accomplished.

Looking back at my elementary school years (without some melodrama) I had one of the

greatest experiences I could ever ask for. To be able to try and repeat that for someone

else would be the greatest opportunity.

Before deciding to research this profession, I thought about being a nurse,

however I quickly realized I can barely look at a pimple without cringing. Next I thought

about being a social worker, but I can barely handle my own problems. Another job I

looked at was a psychologist, however to I don't have that much interest in how people's

brain works and how to solve their problems. I had also been thinking a lot about what

subjects I like most in school and came to the conclusion there isn't one singular subject

that I was passionate about. That is how I came to elementary school teaching. I knew

that in elementary schools a teacher has to teach a variety of subjects and that would be

perfect for me because if I taught one subject, I would get sick and tired of it.

During my research, I found some interesting things that I wouldnt have thought

an elementary school teacher would have to do. For example, before researching this

profession I had no idea that I would have to be skilled in so many different aspects of

technology other than google docs, or that I would have to find my own creative ways of

teaching a subject to make it fun, rather than just spilling out information.

In my interview with Patty McCarthy (an elementary school teacher herself) I

gained some valuable knowledge that I will carry with me when it comes time to decide

if I do want to pursue this career. For instance, it is important to be aware of that fact that

a child's personal problems are often left on the teacher to handle during school, so it is

important to know how to juggle teaching a whole class and also helping every child with

their personal needs. I was also informed that being a teacher requires the ability to keep

learning throughout your whole career, in Ms.McCarthys words: Being a teacher

requires being a lifelong learner. Ms.McCarthy also warned me about that times when a

teacher starts to worry about the well being of their students too much and ends up not

focusing on their own needs. She said that it is important to find a balance between the

two. One of the last things that Ms.McCarthy shared with me was the reality of being a

new teacher. All in all, she informed me that it is vital to have mentors and experience

teachers around you, because new teachers often end up quitting after a few years

because there is not enough support.

In the end, I acquired very valuable and important information that will affect my

decision overall. However, I thoroughly enjoyed researching this profession and it still

stands as one of the most seemingly enjoyable professions that I would be able to pursue.
