II. Summary
An aging grandmother and her sweet granddaughter lives peacefully in a small
village of Jeju island. But a circumstance happened, Hye-Ji got lost while her
grandmother is occupied looking through something in the market to buy for her
granddaughter. Gye-Choon is eager to find her sweet granddaughter and did everything to
find her. After gone missing for 12 years, she is reunited with her grandmother.

III. Analysis
A. Characters
1. Protagonist
a) Youn Yuh-Jung as Gye-Choon
Gye-Choon is a respected and beloved member of close-
knit community, earn her status as the best haenyeo (diver) in a
town of Jeju island. She lives with her only grandchild who she
dotes her so much.
b) Kim Go-Eun as Hye-Ji
Hye-Ji is a lovely and talented grandchild of Gye-Choon
and lives with her grandmother after her father dies and her mom
abandoned her at her young age.
c) Yang Ik-Joon as Choong Seob
Choong-Seob is a composed art teacher of Hye-Ji whom he
pursued to continue bringing out the best of her talent.
d) Choi Minho as Han-Yi
Han-Yi is the son of Suk-Ho. He is the only fiend of Hye-Ji
in the school of which they are both attending and admires Hye-Ji.
 2. Antagonist
a) Ryu Joon-Yeol as Chul-Han
Chul-Han is the one who called friend of Min-Hee and
the leader of their group doing some various things that against the
law.
b) Nam Tae-Boo as Choong-Hee
Choong-Hee is the friend of Chul-Han and of the other
member of the group where Hye-Ji belongs to.
3. Minor Characters
a) Kim Hee-Won as Suk-Ho
Suk-Ho has a golden tooth and the nephew of Gye-Choon
who take turns looking after Hye-Ji when she was young.
b) Shin Eun-Jung as Myung-Ok
Myung-Ok is the wife of Suk-Ho
c) Park Min-Ji as Min-Hee
Min-Hee is the only friend of Hye-Ji while they are
wandering in the city of Seoul.
d) Jang Hyuk-Jin as Agent Byun
Agent Byun is a real estate agent who keeps coming to
Gye-Choons house and ask her to sell her house already. He is the
one who manage to get Gye-Choons house back.
B. Setting
1. Time
The first part of the movie, where the young Hye-Ji is with her
grandmother, takes time between the year of 2000 to 2005. They are living
a simple life like planting, diving and picking some goods out of the
plants. Theres no still toilet in the house of Gye-Choons and their pet pig
eats the poos. Theres no high technology gadgets are in there except from
the radios and cassette players that can be seen in the movie.
The second part of the movie, where Hye-Ji is now a grown up
woman, takes place between the year of 2010 to 2016. Where the
smartphones, computer shops/cafe, and some more are bloomed. Online
dating and chatting became popular too. Theres a scene of the movie
where the group of Chul-Han are in the computer cafe eating instant
noodles. The other one is Chul-Han, getting rid of Hye-Jis phone after
they almost killed the business man, afraid of being traced by the police.
2. Place
The first part of the movie takes place in the small town of the Jeju
island near the ocean. Hye-Ji can be seen in the movie cheering her
 grandmother, diving while she is on the land. Theres a scene where Gye-
Choon and her grandchild are in the fields of canola, in the harbor and in
the boat where Suk-Ho owned and Hye-Ji visits her father in the hills.
Their house is simple. Has a comport room but there is no toilet. They
dining room is where they sleep also. Like the traditional house of a
Korean.
The second part of the movie takes place in the city of Seoul where
Hye-Ji grown and learned to survive. Min-Hee and Hye-Ji are sharing in a
small room which they are renting that can be seen in the movie. Hye-Ji
and her group comes to the computer caf, planning to rob and going to
the motel where Hye-Ji pretended to be a prostitute. They split themselves
after they thought Chul-Han and Choong-Hee killed the business man and
Hye-Ji comes back again to the Jeju island where she met again her
grandmother.
C. Conflict
1. Man against Man
Hye-Ji being framed of the two, Chul-Han and Choong-Hee, will
tell the police that she is the one who killed the business man if Hye-Ji
cant give the amount of money to the two.
Hye-Jis father who showed up suddenly to ask for money after
getting the news that she was reunited to her grandmother using the money
of her grandmother to give the money to her father and Hye-Jis pleading
to never show up again after that.
Hye-Ji adjusting from her grandmother after being apart like
locking the bathroom for her grandmother cant come in, sleeping next to
her and spoon feeding her using the spoon of her grandmother.
Hye-Ji dealing with his art teacher patience for bringing out the
best of her talent and to join the art contest which held in Seoul.
Hye-Ji dealing to Han-Yis determination for being closed, to
befriend and the admire Han-Yi gives to her.
Agent Byuns bargaining his offer to Gye-Choon to sell her house
immediately.
2. Man against Society
Hye-Ji being displeasured by the community around her for being
seen smoking and wearing provocative clothes.
Hye-Ji dealing with her crimes she made and being imprisoned by
it for a year.
 Hye-Ji and Gye-Choons dealing with the people around her when
they are searching for each other is said to be dead after a couple of days,
weeks, months, or years without the confirmation and the truth.
3. Man against Herself
Hye-Jis will to pursue her talent and to continue it while living in
the Jeju island.
Hye-Jis suppressing her past, secrets and urge to confess to her
grandmother.
Hye-Jis change the road of her life after reminiscing her past and
decisions.
Hye-Jis hope and determinacy to find her grandmother after being
imprisoned for a year and getting the news from Suk-Ho that her
grandmother is lost for a couple of days.
Gye-Choons will to find her only grandchild in many ways and
hope to be back in their house even the years passed.
D. Plot
Gye-Choon is the grandmother of Hye-Ji, her only grandchild. The movie
begins with Hye-Ji, in the land, cheering her grandmother while diving. These two
loves each other and take cares of each other. Hye-Ji discovered her talent in arts
after her grandmother bargain and eel that she found in the harbor for a set of
crayons which Hye-Ji wants. Going home, Hye-Ji starts to draw around the wall
of house, on the tables and more. Hye-Ji draws her uncle, Suk-Ho that has a
golden tooth. Suk-Ho asked to color the one of is tooth gold for 500 won. Hye-Ji
accepts the money which her uncle gave but still refused to color it gold. She said
that her gold colored crayon is only for her grandmother. While in the fields of
Canola, Hye-Ji draw herself with her grandma and her pet pig Toya in the fields.
While her grandmother are gathering some flowers in the fields, Hye-Ji show it to
her grandmother. Hye-Ji drew her grandmother alone and placed it on the wall
and wanted to clor the hair of his grandmother gold but her grandmother asked
her to do it later after they get back to home. Being invited of a wedding, they
leave their small town to attend the wedding. Before the wedding, they pass to a
busy market where Gye-Choon wants to buy something for her grandchild. Hye-Ji
founds a bracelate which she likes so much and asks for her grandmother to buy it
and her grandmother approved, anything for her only grandchild whom she dotes
so much. They moved on and still, Gye-Choon is busy looking for more items to
buy for her Hye-Ji. But being busy, she did not realized that her only grandchild is
gone missing. She screams her name, asked the vendors if they seen her
grandchild. Yet, theres no still Hye-Ji to be found.
Twelve years passed, Hye-Ji is now a grown up woman, with a scarred
mind and a secret. Hangouts with the friends of her friend, Min-Hee in computer
cafs, shoplifting and conning some people in the city of Seoul. Min-Hee with
Hye-Ji, shoplift a cosmetic store and after that they go straight to their house
which is a one small room. In the room while lying down, Hye-Ji used one of the
cosmetic product of Min-Hee to draw in a paper while the light is out and only a
flash lamp. ChulHan and Choong-Hee invited the two to go to a computer caf.
The two boys chats the business man and plan to rob him with Min-Hee
pretending to be a prostitute but she refused. Chul-Han hits Min-Hees face
several times with his finger. Hye-Ji, not wanted to see her friend hit by Chul-
Han, she presented herself. Hye-Ji go to a motel and meet the man. While the man
is in the shower, Hye-Ji did her job moving slowly and carefully to his coat taking
his wallet, fearing the man would notice her. When its Hye-Jis turn to go to
shower room, he peaks at what the was the man doing and waits for Chul-Han and
Choong-Hee to come in to do their part. After the two came in, they pretended to
be the brother of Hye-Ji and starts taking pictures of the man and threatened to
send the pictures to his wife if he didnt gave more money to them. Being
disagreed by the man, the two started throwing some punches to the man, not
satisfied, they wrapped the man with a blanket and pushed him until his head hit
the age of table. Hye-Ji, in the back of two, screams to stop what they are doing
already. They stop when theres a blood staining out in the blanket. Panicked if
the man is already dead. They start to run away in the room and decided to leave
the room which Min-Hee and Hye-Ji rents. They get rid of the items that can be
traced from them and decide to split up and part they own ways. Min-Hee, buys
some drinks while Hye-Ji is waiting on one of the stair outside the building. Min-
Hee comes back and notice that theres a missing person printed in a carton on
which they are drinking and it has the same name of her friend, Hye-Ji. Hye-Ji
realizes it and decided to part the ways alone.
