Date: 12/6/13

Childs name: Alice

Observer: Millie

Setting: Inside during morning play time after the morning meeting

Observation:

Juliette and Alice were sitting on the floor and they

decided to make a farm scene. The farm was connected
to a castle that had been made by two other children in
the class. When they had finished making the scene I
asked them to describe to me what they had created.
They made a realistic farm and were able to identify
many of the different animals that they had used. During
our conversation Alice brought up her real life experience
and she explained that her and Juliette had been to a
farm with their dad and they were able to describe parts
of the trip to me such as their dad didnt know the way
and he needed a map and that they did not have enough
beds to sleep in.

Links to the framework:

Outcome one: Children have a strong sense of identity

- Children feel safe, secure and supported: openly express their ideas with
interactions with others
- Engages in shared play experiences

Outcome four: children are confident and involved learners

- Transfer knowledge from one setting to another

Outcome five: Children are effective communicators

- Children act verbally and non-verbally with others for a range of purposes

Interpretation:

During this experience Alice was effective in communicating to me what she had
helped to make. She was shy and reserved to begin with but after I talked to her
and Juliette for a while she slowly began to become more confident and speak
louder. By the end of our conversation Alice was clearly articulating what she had
helped create. Alice was also able to link the conversation we were having about
the farm to a real life experience that she had had which involved going to the
farm with her family. As the conversation progressed Alice was showing more
and more enthusiasm toward the conversation and what we were discussing. By
the end of the conversation I feel Alice was in an environment that she felt safe
and secure in and one where she could freely express and share her idea.
