B.E.

(Eighth Semester) EXAMINATION, June, 2004 (Electronics

& Communication Engg.) Television and radar engineering
(EC-702)
Note : Attempt any jive questions. All questions carry equal marks.
I. (a) Justify the particular choice of AM and FM for the modulation of video
and audio signals in TV transmission. 10
(b) Sketch and explain the vertical synchronizing pulse in the composite
video signal of a 625 line system. Why sen'ations are used? 10
2. Draw a block diagram of the sound channel in a TV receiver. Expalain briefly
how the intercarrier sound signal as obtained at the video detector is processed to
produce sound output. Why is a de-emphasis circuit after the FM detector ? 20
3. (a) Explain the relative merits and demerits of the three TV systems.
Explain the factors which influence the choice of anyone of the three systems. 10 (b)
Explain, how by frequency interleaving the colour information is
accomodated within the same channel bandwidth of7 MHz? 10
4. (a) Explain the principle and work.ing of the 'image orthicon' camera tube. (See
Unit-I, Page 23, Q.17) 10
(b),Explain the advantages ofVSB transmission. 4
(See Unit-II, Page 63, Q;17)
6 (See Unit-I, Page 18,
Q~12)

(c) Explain the following(i)

Negative modulation (ii)
D.C. Restroration.
5._(a) What is the function of a reflector and director in a Yogi antenna?
Explain-why such antenna configurations are highly directional? What is the effect of
increasing the number of director channels? 10 (See Unit-II, Page 74, Q.21) (b) What
is a 'Balun' ? Give its constructional details and explain how it can be used as an
impedance matching network between two different impedances at high frequencies?
(See Unit-II, Page 75, Q.22) 10 6. (a) Explain the following-
(i) sequentiallobing (ii) conical scanning 10
(b) How is a frequency modulate CW Radar better or' vorse than the simple
Radar? 10
7. (a) Describe the principle of operation of the CW radar type capable of
measuring both target range as well as target velocity. 10
(b) Write a brief note on Radar displays. (See Unit-V, Page 210, Q.12) 10
