Personal: Joe Pass- Guitar; NHOP- Bass

Tempo: 175
Key: F Major

Dramatic Devices:
Staccato- Joe is playing this solo with his thumb so its very staccato and
percussive sounding.

Slides- Slides are another popular dramatic device used by Joe Pass.

Sweeps- Joe pass uses sweeps all the time when playing arpeggios.

Articulation- Joe uses a lot of long 8th note lines in his solos. All these notes are
played very clear. He plays with his thumb for this whole solo, which is why it
sounds so percussive.

Chords- Joe sometimes throws chords into his solos and he does this at the last A
section.

Long Lines- Once again, Joe uses A LOT of long lines.

Tessitura:
3.5 octaves

Scale Preference:
Major and Derivatives- Joe is the master at taking the fundamentals to the
extreme

Bebop- Joe frequently adds the ^7 in dominant lines. (mm. 4, 7)

Harmonic Minor- He uses Phrygian Dominant when moving to the ii. (m. 10)

Altered- Joe plays the augmented triad within the altered scale all the time. (m.
48)
Recurrent Pattern:
He plays 6th intervals descending several times. (mm. 11-12, 40)
When the ii chords come up he plays off of the IVmaj9 arpeggio a lot
Similar to playing off the IVmaj9 arpeggio, he also sweeps the iimi9 arpeggio a
lot.
He plays off the augmented arpeggio on V chords like in mm. 48 and 28
On ii chords he likes to sit out an eight rest before playing a line (mm. 7, 32, 43,
50, 59)

Performance Practice
Developmental Technique:
He starts out the solo with a repetitive and simple melody for the first 8 measures then he
pretty much takes off till the beginning of the second chorus. He does the same thing for
the second time around but he plays big chords for the last time through A which gives it
a much more dynamic feel.
