Effects Debate

Effects of exposure to explicit sexual or

violent content
There is an argument that the audience, especially children,
should be protected from exposure to violent and explicit
materials because they can unduly influence them. This
argument presupposes that the audience is passive and not
able to discern between right and wrong, and that they will
therefore react to the text and possibly act out its content. This
applies a lot to my game as my game includes a lot of violence
and killing therefore would have a high age rating so children arent influenced.

Effects of Advertising
This debate focuses on advertising as a very powerful media tool which aims to
persuade us to purchase certain products and services by
claiming that we need the products and services by
claiming that we need the products or that
the products will make our lives better. Again,
this approach assumes that the audience is
passive and will be presumed to purchase
products and services by the advertisers.
This is accepted with regard to the children,
and advertising aimed at them is tightly regulated.

Health Concerns
3,034 children and teenagers were examined to found out their video game usage rates.
Video game addiction statistics from this study revealed the following:

* The average length of time spent playing video games was 20 hours per week.

* An estimated 72 percent of American households play video games.

* An estimated nine percent of the 3,034 participants in the study showed signs of video
game addiction.

* Four percent of study participants were categorized as extreme users who played video
games 50 hours per week on average.

* 40 percent of online video game players admitted to

playing online games as a way to escape from the real
world.

Some of the information I can also derive from these

statistics is that a lot of people play online games to
escape from the real world.

Censorship Debates
Censorship debates centre on the idea of passive
and active consumption of media texts and our
ability to decode the content of these texts and
make rational decisions for ourselves. Some people
believe that audiences should be protected from
certain things and that the best way to do this is to
censor it in the first place, thus taking away the
choice from the consumer.
