GROUP WRITING ASSIGNMENT (20%)

Given below is a topic for an essay:

With the rise of Internet technologies, teaching and learning activities have migrated

to the online environment .Some claim that the traditional way of teaching (face to face

interaction) is better than the online teaching and learning activities. Discuss both the

views and give your opinion.

The process of teaching and learning is an important element in so that students can

follow the content of their subject. According to Sharifah Alwiah Alsagoff (1987) the method

of teaching is circulation towards the goal of teaching which has been planned properly. Wan

Noraini binti Wan Daud (2005) also say that such methods actually mean streets to achieve

the goal. In education, the teacher is a pillar in the successful learning and teaching in

schools. According to Sathiamoorthy Kannan. (2002) the most traditional and has a long

history of education is carried being out in a way taught by the lecture. As from those days,

teachers distribute knowledge to students with verbal or speech. As the topic given there is a

claim that traditional way of teaching is better than the online teaching and learning activities

via Internet.

As we all knew the development of Information and Communication Technology

(ICT), especially internet technology has given a positive impact to include education.

Ministry of Education action that makes use of various teaching aids such as laptop

computers, compact discs, the use of various learning educational software and a variety of

other teaching aids . Teaching and learning is the primary focus of the management of the

national education whether in primary or in secondary school level. Thus, the education

management at the state and at the national level are always looking for an alternative or best

1
teaching and learning methods in order to improve the ability of a process of teaching and

learning (Baharuddin, 2005).

Actually in my opinion, I feel that using the Internet in teaching and learning

activities can really make the learning process with the acceptance of instructional technology

in the curriculum planning. At the same time, curriculum planners can work with

instructional designers to specify the use of instructional technology in the school curriculum.

This will better ensure the effectiveness of teaching and curricula that have been outlined

compare to the traditional way of teaching which can end with simple stories and chats which

is not really planned.

In addition, teaching and learning with the Internet can change the system or approach

to teaching whereby the teaching technology can affect the system or the process of teaching

and learning approaches. It can change the system or the conventional approach, a system of

distance learning, open classroom system or independent school system. Instructional

technology can change the way teaching is planned and prepared. For example, teaching

computer literacy curriculum. In lesson planning, it involves the use of computers, the

construction of knowledge through collaborative learning, problem solving and learning

strategies of domination. The use of instructional technology, especially information

technology, may change the way the timetable planned and implemented in schools, colleges

and universities. In comparison, the traditional way of teaching which always being assist

with chalk and blackboard do really make the teaching process a success in this current era.

Personally, do you think our students willing to sit and listen whatever teacher is saying in the

classroom. Im sure they prefer exploring and sharing the same topic or issue than being

discuss with the use of Internet

2
The process of teaching and learning is student-centered and based on knowledge and

information. Teachers only manage learning activities and provide much needed experience

and search information using Internet in the learning process. The introduction of a flexible

schedule by the MOE in 1993 to provide flexibility in curriculum planning and teaching

strategies. This allows teachers to plan lessons more effectively and provide more time for

teacher training and check books to deal with learning problems, while the number of

teaching hours are the same (Yusup Hashim, 1998).Im sure, the Internet is able to change the

Learning Experience. The response today to the experience of learning occurs not

inadvertently but deliberately organized. Thus, this experience should be held with a neat

design. The use or application of teaching technology (Internet) on a regular basis can help

every student gets a special learning experience and of course through a certain process to

master in something.

Actually, teaching and learning to use the internet is a program that has the potential

to improve the ability of the students who have stage and low academic achievement that

needs to be extended, especially against the disciples who received the typical traditional way

of education. The series of statistics than indicated this, the reviewer has made a decision to

see the effectiveness of Teaching and Learning via internet in an attempt to improve the

reading skills of students who have problems mastering reading activity. The results of the

study that will be formed later is something that needs to be studied in greater depth at

existing implementation of this program can improve achievement and reading proficiency of

students who face learning problems or otherwise

The use of computers, laptops, LCD projectors, compact discs and other various

elements of ICT as teaching aids that can attract and increase the tendency of students to

carry out educational activities. ICT integration through some changes and approach teaching

and learning occurs. Among these is the change in focus from teacher-centered teaching to
3
student-centered teaching. In this case, students focus on learning activities that are oriented

to the process of exploration and discovery based on the theory of constructivism. Bill Gates

(1999), in his book Business @ The Speed of Thought stating personal computer can

transform traditional learning methods that require teachers to give instructions to a 'hands on'

and make full use of the existing inquiry in students. Personal computers enable them to tap

the information according to their capacity.

Through the use of electronic communications (e-mail), net meeting, chat rooms and

so, teachers and students can exchange ideas among themselves or with teachers and students

from other schools. Exchange of information with schools from abroad will be encouraged in

view of the benefits in terms of improving the communication of teachers and students in

addition to getting new knowledge about other cultures and their respective countries.

Through the use of Internet, students can master various manipulative skills such as word

processing, database and presentations using technology tools. Skills and mastery of the

technology will produce students who are better prepared and confident to enter the

workforce.

As a conclusion, the use of ICT as a means of communication is two-pronged in

information sharing and communication. Teachers can take advantage of this capability to

conduct collaborative learning in the classroom. This method is used to allow students and

teachers from different locations to send, receive and share information in various forms of

multimedia elements such as text, graphics, audio, video and animation. ICT R & D is an

important matter and needs the support and efforts in earnest among the school leaders,

teachers, students and all stakeholders. Multimedia technology and the Internet also provides

a method of teaching and learning methods that are different from the traditional teaching and

learning. Through the use of modern technology, students can master a method of learning by

learning that they care about and love. In addition, information technology and the Internet
4
also provides the ability interactivity. I strongly claim that the online teaching and learning

activities is always better and must be welcomed and practice for further success of the

students. I do really feel that it is the time to say goodbye to the traditional way of teaching

traditional.
