Welcome Back Students

Welcome to Common Core Geometry with Ms. Ross. If you have any concerns throughout the course,
feel free to contact the teacher on PupilPath using the message application or on Edmodo. In this course, you
will explore your spatial awareness through lab explorations and task-based learning which aligns to the shift in
the New York State Common Core Standards.

Students will be assessed throughout each unit. Assessments include unit projects, unit quizzes and unit
final assessments. All assessments include problems aligned to the Common Core Geometry Regents exam and
include error analysis, mathematical modeling and problem solving skills. Additional help will be available to
students on Tuesdays from 2:20 pm to 2:55 pm and daily on Edmodo from 4 pm to 6 pm.

Homework is assigned on a daily basis and it is very important that homework assignments are done
prior to class. Homework assignments will have discussion questions and problems solving questions. The goal
of this course is for students to understand the math that they are doing and the reasoning behind it. A guide will
be given for students to organize their binders. Students are expected to keep all of their notes in an orderly
fashion and update their table of contents daily. In the event of an absence, students must look at the list of
topics for the missing content and obtain the missing notes from a classmate. All assignments should be
documented in a planner. TYWLS planners will be available.

The most important tool for being successful in this course is a positive mindset. In this course, we will
learn things, make mistakes and keep moving forward.
-Ms. Ross

TYWLS Course Outline for Students and Families 2016- 2017

Course Name: Common Core Geometry Credit Value: 1 per semester
Prerequisite: Algebra 1 Common Core Department: Math
Teacher: Ms. Ross Date: November 2016
*All courses assess student performance based on the TYWLS School-Wide Grading Policy for grades 6-12.

Course Description:
In this course, students will study the various concepts of Common Core Geometry. Students will
explore differences between figure congruence and figure similarity using geometric tools such as
compasses, rulers and patty paper (tracing paper). Students will prove mathematical theorems and make
conjectures based on various Geometric labs. Students will study triangle congruence proofs, rigid
motions, attributes of similar figures, triangle similarity proofs, dilations, area, volume, geometry in the
coordinate plane and circles.
Concepts form Algebra that will be using in this class include solving linear equations, solving
quadratic equations by completing the square, plotting points, graphing lines, and calculating area and
perimeter or 2 dimensional figures.
The course ends with a Common Core Geometry Regents exam on Friday June 16th, 2017.

Resources/ Materials for Differentiation:

In this course students will use various tools to make Geometry more hands on. Students will learn
to use a compass and patty paper (tracing paper). Tools will be used to find supporting evidence, make
conjectures and aid in the independent completion of classroom tasks and projects. The use of
Geometric applets and Geometers Sketchpad along with the Promethean board software will support
the teaching of various concepts. The 3-Act Math Tasks by Dan Meyer will bring videos of real world
situations into the classroom.
For this course, students will need to sign up for an Edmodo account. All homework assignments,
and polls will be assigned on Edmodo. In the event that students do not have access to a computer, the
computer lab is available for students to print the assignment. Additional resources will also be available
for support with the content including videos and extra problems.
Office hours will also be available on Edmodo Monday through Friday from 4pm to 6pm for
additional help from the teacher via Edmodo. Quizzes may be assigned on Edmodo to adhere to time
constraints. All unit assessments will be given in class.
Students will need TI-84 graphing calculators for class to ensure success and ease with complicated
calculations. Students must also have pencils, a compass, graph paper and a binder with a section for
Geometry on a daily basis. These tools are essential to student success in Geometry.

Project-based Learning Opportunities:

There will be two major projects for each unit. Projects are evaluated on four components:
mathematical, real world application, error analysis and timeliness. Unit assessments are comprised of
computational problems and error analysis tasks. Students will complete in-class tasks that encourage:
Persistent problem solving (Common Core Math Practice 1)
Recognizing patterns in repeated reasoning (Common Core Math Practice 8) and
Use appropriate tools strategically (Common Core Math Practice 5).

Communication:
Every Tuesday, teachers will be available for meetings, phone conferences or email communications.
Phone calls will be made from 2:55 pm to 3:35 pm. In any other case, calling the school main office and
leaving a message would reach the teacher. All messages will be responded to via phone call or email at
my earliest convenience if necessary. PupilPath and Edmodo will be updated so parents could keep track
of student progress. Messages could be left for Ms. Ross via email at cross@tywlsqueens.org or on
PupilPath.

Extra Help:
Tuesday tutoring will be available at the school from 2:20 pm to 2:55 pm in room 426.
Edmodo allows for students to receive extra help during teacher office hours, Monday through
Friday from 4 pm to 6 pm.
Regents tutoring will be available.
Additional resources such as videos, practice worksheet and interactive animations will be made
available on Edmodo. KhanAcademy is a great resource for additional support with specific
topics. Links will be made available on Edmodo.

Careers Involving Geometry:

There are many interesting fields that use concepts from Geometry. Some careers include:
Architecture
Civil Engineering
Fashion Designer
Carpentry
Wood Working
Students will also learn how to think hypothetically and support statements with evidence with is
important for careers as:
Lawyer
Medical Doctor
Nursing
Crime Scene Investigation
Detective
Politicians
