Artist Statement

My work is a symbolic way to let one know who I am, what makes me, me. It was

inspired by David Hockneys project known as the Joiner. A Joiner is a photograph that is

cut into pieces in order to create more depth in the work. Its an unusual platform for

photography its almost uncanny. The objects portrayed in my work are things that represent

where I am from, my passions, and my home. In a way, this project was created to remind myself

where I came from. My project consisted symbols of my city, home, what I am into, and my first

pet.

The first I object that I want to talk about in my work is the palm tree on the left of the

picture. I decided to add this because it represents California. California is known for its perfect

weather and palm trees. Moreover, I took this photograph in my front yard, we got this tree four

years ago, and added with the intention to symbolize how much I grew in the past four years.

The next abject Id like to point out are the stickers on the right. The women on the stickers are

Sade and the model on the right is unknown shot by Larry Clark. However, the point of these

objects were to represent streetwear and rap. Supreme is known worldwide through their street

wear clothing company and is often being advocated by famous artist such as Travis Scott, A$AP

Rocky, and Justin Bieber. Supreme has simply started a movement for the youth, Finally, the last

object Id like to point out are the flowers. The florid colored one on the left is part of my garden

at my house. I added this because my parents love to plant plants and its a habit that they picked

up in Mexico. One can say they plant these plants due to their nostalgia for Mexico and it helps

make it feel more like home. The pink flowers on the right are called azaleas. I added these

flowers because they represent South Gate. South Gate adopted this flower as their symbol in

1965 and was known as Azalea City.

The entire portrait defines who I am and where I came from. The symbols used in my

work are aspects of my life. This art piece may be used as a resume as itll give my audience a

bit of information about myself. Given that I am into street wear Id like to advocate my artwork

through clothing hoping to be similar to supreme. Id also like to post it up on websites such as a

blogging one so I can provide the readers a visual presentation of who I am. I hope to get a

positive reaction from the audience as my art piece consists of different colors in order to make it

more interesting. My art piece fits in with the history of art practice because art is the expression

of human creative skill and imagination that produces work to be appreciated for their beauty or

its emotional appeal toward the audience. Although my artistic skills may not be proficient, my

art piece falls under these aspects. Photography is a way to stop time in order to create more

depth into a scene, as for my work it is separated to create more attention and it connects my

audience with my life as it were a quick review on who I am.

On this project, David Hockney was my inspiration as he was the one that created the

Joiner portrait. Another artist that has influenced the artwork, in general, is Rene Magritte. He

influenced my artwork due to the way he presents philosophical ideas and surrealism in his work.

The objects portrayed in my work are things that represent where I am from, my passions, and

my home. In a way, this project was created to remind myself where I came from. My project

consisted symbols of my city, home, what I am into, and my first pet.
