B. Background
One of the most important things in teaching and learning process is a
teaching material. Generally, the teaching material used in the
learning process is a textbook. Textbook is a reference used in schools
that contain learning material. Textbook is also an important role in
learning activities and deliver curriculum materials in a particular
subject so that a major part of an educational system. Textbook must
have good quality, because good textbooks can help students learn.
Quality of the books must meet some of criteria, there are 10 criteria
based on the opinion Greene and Petty for analyze textbook. For
example, analyzing the book Passport to the World 2: A Fun and Easy
English Book for Grade VIII of Junior High Schools that use in the
learning system. English textbooks with good quality will improve the
quality of English teaching learning process. In order to the book
Passport to the World 2: A Fun and Easy English Book for Grade VIII of
Junior High Schools can improve the quality of teaching and learning
process in English, it is necessary to know whether the high-grade of

some use colored paper, there are also into columns with a colored

material is almost all the same, using the pictures, a standard
vocabulary and interest short story. In each unit there is always
compact dictionary. All questions in the book are always there
explanation, so it can be concluded that in this book contains the
material and explanations that appeal to students.

2. The textbook should be able to give motivation students.


In unit 4 She Won the Match! besides the author explains the
subject matter about the request, recount, schedule, agenda, and
past tense, the authors also explained a agenda for Sunday during
the match preparation and short story entitled Dina Won the
Match!. Before Dina won in badminton match she made
preparation with light activity in Sunday. The agenda and the short
story is giving students motivation because it tells a struggle and
hard work a student junior high school grade 8th who won of the
final badminton match and make a pride of accomplishment, Dina
match in single woman, she can procure a golden medal and money
in the match. Thus, students can be motivated to learn and work
hard.

3. The textbook should have interesting illustration for students.

Overall use of illustrations and images contained in this text are in
accordance with the submitted materials. There is an interesting
illustration in material when someone doing something, for example
the picture about someone to invite her friend watching the football.
The illustration is very interesting because it uses colorful pictures
that make interest in reading students increased and the illustration
also there is explanation. Then, there are some questions in unit 3
to matching the picture and the activities of someone in the picture,
so its makes student easy to answer the question. On the next
pages the authors give example of letter, there are some illustration
like formal and informal birthday letter.

4. The textbook consider the aspects of linguistics.


Each unit in the book Passport to the World 2: A Fun and Easy
English Book for Grade VIII of Junior High Schools authors describe
the material using a standard vocabulary in the sentence for junior
high school. The author presents the material with good and clear
explanations in every material mostly in illustration with picture like
the unit 5 Congratulation! You Got an A about saying
congratulation and expressing congratulation to use vocabulary and
picture that is easy to understand students. The sentence used in
the book is effective, unambiguous, simple, polite, and interesting
so easily understood by students. At the rear of the unit 5 also has a
compact dictionary that contains a word meaning not known if the
students. The materials about irregular verbs for past tense is the
use of vocabulary in daily life, such as take-took, write- wrote,
break- broke.

5. The textbook should be related with other lesson.


In unit 8 An Excursion Museum there is a short story related to the
lessons of history and human values. The Story of Helen Keller,
Helen Keller is a woman who cant see and hear (blind and deaf),
but she is also an author, political activist and lecturer in the United

States. She is an author of the famous book The World I Live In and
The Story of My Life which became a classic in American literature
and translated into 50 languages. She is one of the greatest
humanitarians in the 20th century. In unit 8 also there is an identity
parade of Napoleon Bonaparte, Queen Victoria, and Pablo Picasso so
the materials related to the history lesson. In the end of unit 8 also
describe about the museum, and the museum is very closely with
history.

6. The textbook should be able to stimulate the activity of the


student's self.
From some units in the book Passport to the World 2: A Fun and
Easy English Book for Grade VIII Junior High Schools, only found text
that can stimulate the activity of the student's self in unit 9 Hello,
is Tintan There?. There are some everyday conversations such as
when talking on the phone with a friend or teacher who uses English
properly and decently, so it can be applied in everyday life. In unit 9
authors also provide some examples utter a phone number with the
English language.

7. The textbook avoid the concept of vaguely.


The author explained the concepts of the materials with clearly,
accurate and good , so as not to make confused the students. In
unit 2 Can I have This One, Please? the materials about asking for
good/ services, giving good/ services, and refusing goods/ services
students to get an explanation of the material, so students can
distinguish and use it appropriately. In unit 2, the authors also
explain the descriptive text that describes the object.

8. The textbook should have a clear perspective.


The viewpoint of this book is clear and unequivocal, each unit in this
book is presented in advance, can be seen in the unit 1 "You Look

Great!" Before the material described there are standards of
competence, basic competence and course objectives. Then, the
text book also describes the point of view of neatly arranged and
systematic. In each unit of this book after providing the material
and the explanation accompanied instance then provide training
and duties. Unit 1 describes expression give and respond to
compliments, there are examples of the question and answer, and
the last there are the tasks in accordance with the material.

9. Textbook should be able to give the consolidation, emphasis on the


values of children and adults.
In the unit 6 Could You? about asking for, accepting, and refusing
a help. The authors describe of the material that make students
more understand about helping, and if it is not able to help, the
students can use the polite answer without offending others.

10. The textbooks should be able to appreciate the personal


differences of the students and the wearer.
This text books not discriminate each individual or group. For
example, each assignment in this books the instruction shown
equally to all students. Example:
a. Discuss the following question with your friends.
b. Read along the following dialogue while listening to your teacher.
c. Listen and complete the following story
Three instructions is an example of the instruction in the book in
unit 7 What Do You Think of the Story? it can be used as evidence
that the book does not distinguish between students, not
specifically shown to students clever or less. The textbooks are
appropriate and suitable for students of junior high school. In this
book is described in terms of communicative language and easily
understood by students.

D. Conclusion
Textbook is a learning material that is commonly used in schools and
supports a learning process. The book Passport to the World 2: A Fun

published by PT Tiga Serangkai Pustaka Mandiri that has 9 units of the
subject matter. The textbook has met the criteria set forth by Greene
and Petty, so this textbook includes good quality. The author is
meticulous in presenting instructional materials or theory. The author
also describes a standard competence and basic competencies in the
curriculum before entering the subject matter. The material presented
in this book has compatibility with the curriculum KTSP. Each unit in the
book also includes four aspects of English skills, listening, speaking,
reading, and writing.

E. Suggestion
Actually, the book already has a good and high quality, it's just that the
material should be described in detail because the textbook only
explains the material slightly and directly addresses the questions.
