A review of a previous A conclusion of a concept
lesson/activity
Rationale Why is there a need for this lesson?

By having students draw self-portraits of themselves, it allows for the children to

develop and enhance their self-awareness and body image. At this age children
begin to make observations about themselves, as well as their peers, its
important to recognize that everyone looks different although we share similar
traits. Drawing a self-portrait helps to enhance observation skills, which is used

vocabulary, syntax, or discourse that is central to this learning segment. How is
this activity using the specific language demand?

Procedures (step by Anticipatory Set (Connection/Motivation) What will you do to get childrens
step) attention, or to introduce children to this learning activity? Describe the process
in getting them interested and engaged.

Teacher will show students how to create a self-portrait, by showing them in a

large group meeting. Teacher will use herself as a model. Teacher will point to her
hair and draw it, face, eyes, and mouth and draw them on to the paper. Teacher
will tell the students she will invite them during center time to the art center so
they may create their own. While the teacher is drawing herself, she will be
enthusiastic and excited to what she is drawing.
Instruction/Mini Lesson (Outline the procedures or sequence activities that will
make up this learning experience; for instance, you might follow a routine
wherein you model (I try); and ask for active involvement (we try) during a whole
group session.

Teacher will invite children to look at themselves in the mirror. What do they see?
What features do they notice on their own faces? Where are their eyes? What
color are their eyes? Noses? Mouths? Etc. What do they notice about their
features? What shapes are they?

Teacher will remind children that a portrait is a picture drawing or painting of a

person.

After looking in the mirror and discussing, their own features teacher will ask
each child to draw his/her own face.
Teacher will encourage children to include the details they noticed and discussed
when they looked in the mirror. Invite the children to dictate their thoughts about
their self-portraits to you with prompts such as, Tell me about your self-portrait.

Independent Practice (small group activity, working with partners, or

independently)

This will be a small group activity, that way teacher can have closer interactions
with the students.
Closure (sharing/reflection, next steps)

Reflect with the children on why these features are important. What do eyes do?
Noses? Mouths? How could they draw these features?

activities learning today in class?

During closing circle time, at the end of the day, teacher will go over what they
did in small groups, the selfportrait. She will present to the class the self-
