(Answer: The exterior and the border of disk centered at (-5, 0) of radius 4).
3. Find the values of the following:
(a) (i 1)1/ 2 (Answer: 4 2[cos3 / 8 i sin 3 / 8] , 4 2[cos11 / 8 i sin11 / 8] )

9. Verify that the following function is analytic:
f ( x, y) e y [( x y)cos x ( x y)sin x] ie y [( x y)cos x ( x y)sin x]
Find f ( z) and f ( z) .
NOTICE:
If f ( z) u( x, y) iv( x, y) then the function f can be viewed as a function of two variables z and z by
zz zz zz zz
writing u ( x, y) iv( x, y) u , iv , . It can be easily shown that

f 1

Hence CR-equations hold if and only if 0 i.e., f ( z) does not depend explicitly on z . Notice that
z
this condition is only a necessary condition for a function to be analytic at the point z .
SOLUTION:
w z i
(a) and
z z i
2
w z i
0 0 z i
z z i
2
However z i is not in the domain of the function, hence the CR- equation do not hold anywhere,
therefore the function is nowhere analytic.
(b) Similar as in (a).
Notice that the above solutions for (a), (b), (c) are a bit different from what I did in class. If you want to use
the method I used in class just find u and v for each function, and verify CR-equations.
11. Verify that the function u( x, y) x3 3xy 2 2xy is harmonic. Find one of its complex
harmonic conjugate v( x, y) and then express the associated complex function
f ( z) u( x, y) iv( x, y) as a function of the complex variable z . Is the function f ( z) entire?
Explain.
(Answer: v( x, y) 3x2 y x2 y3 y 2 ; f ( z) z3 iz 2 ).
I used a different idea in class to find f(z). It is simpler than the above method.
Also Log ( z 5) Log( x 5 iy) is analytic if x 5 0 and y 0 . Hence the function is analytic on
(c) Notice that the function is not defined for z 0 and for z 1 so it is not analytic at these
points. The function is not analytic if
Re(Log ( z)) 0 and Im(Log ( z)) 0
ln | z | 0 and Arg ( z) 0 | z | 1, z z x (0,1] .
We conclude that the function is analytic on the domain \{z | z x, x [0,1]} .
14. Evaluate: log(1 i),sinh(1 i), tanh(1 i),sin( 3 i),sin 1 i,cosh 1(i) .
