QametsappearsonlyunderthegutturallettersandQametsChatuphissomewhat
rare).
NotethatbothCholemandCholemVavarelongvowels(Cholemisactuallya
"defectivespelling"ofCholemVav),ChatephQametsisareducedvowel(i.e.,a"half
vowel"thatcanonlyappearunderthegutturalletters),andQametsChatuphisa
shortvowel.
The"QametsChatuph"isanOTypevowelthatlooksidenticaltotheregularAType
Qametsvowel.WhenyouseeaQamets,youmustask1)isitinaclosedsyllable?
(i.e.,asyllablethatendsinastoppingsound)and2)isthesyllableunaccented?
(mostHebrewwordsareaccentedonthelastsyllable).Ifbothconditionsaremet,the
QametsisChatuphandshouldbepronouncedasan"o"sound.
