CTBF News - August 2010

Dear CTBF Exhibitors and Partners

After a year of planning it's hard to believe that we are only days away from the opening of the 5th annual Cape Town
Book Fair. We are looking forward to welcoming exhibitors from around the world and in particular our colleagues from
Africa to a fair that we have structured to be profitable, productive and enjoyable for all. We thank you for your co-
operation in working with us to reach this point.

South Africa is still riding high on a wave of enthusiasm engendered by the successful hosting of the Soccer World Cup,
an event that put Africa on the map, and we know that this fair will contribute to putting African publishing on the map.
The partnerships we have negotiated with the Goethe-Insitut, the MAPPP-Seta and the Department of Arts and Culture
have meant that we have been able to bring people to the fair that missed out on attending the London Book Fair and
publishers from Africa.

We look forward to welcoming you to the Cape Town Book Fair and to assisting you in making your visit a successful
one. This is the time that our Trade Day slogan ''Where books mean business'' and our public slogan ''Where the story
begins'' will become a reality.

Warm regards
Claudia Kaiser
Director Cape Town Book Fair

Get with the programme

The programme details for the Professional Programme on 30 July, the public programme and the Children's Zone
Programme are all up on the Cape Town Book Fair website: www.capetownbookfair.co.za.

There is also a detailed programme for the Pick n Pay Chef's Theatre which is going to be a huge attraction at the fair this
year.

Programme yourself for the Trade Day

OnOn the 30 July the first Trade Day will be held at the Cape Town Book Fair. It will be packed with opportunities to
network with trade, publishers, book buyers, librarians and others in the book profession from around the world.

The programme has been crafted so that there is something for everyone. If you are not an exhibitor please go to
http://www.capetownbookfair.co.za/trade-visitors/registration/forms to register as a trade visitor. There has been an
excellent response to the introduction of the first dedicated Trade Day at the Cape Town Book Fair this year.

Match-making sessions that will put publishers and book buyers in touch with each other have already been set up and
the schedule is full. There is still a chance to register to attend the Trade Day on 30 July.

Where to get your exhibitor packs

Exhibitors can access the Cape Town International Convention Centre on 29 July from 8am for build-up of their stands.
Your exhibitor packs will be ready for collection at the Conference Organisers Office situated at the back of Hall Three.
We look forward to being of assistance to you.

Donate books to further literacy in South Africa

Literacy is a major focus of the Frankfurt Book Fair and the Cape Town Book Fair. This year Equal Education, a non-
governmental organisation that assists schools in disadvantaged areas to set up libraries have been given a stand at the
fair as part of the CTBF's commitment to literacy.

If you are not planning to take books that you have brought to the fair home with you, they can be delivered to Stand
G4.1. Equal Education is looking for good quality books that are suitable for general reading and in particular for text
books. Your donation could make a big difference in a child's life. We are also encouraging the public to donate books.
LitCam Reading and Learning Room launch

LitCam, a literacy project of the Frankfurt Book Fair, will be launching Reading Rooms and Learning Rooms, as well as a
new library in the disadvantaged areas of Khayelitsha and Mfuleni.

One Reading Room and Learning Room in Mfuleni will be opened in Mfuleni in partnership with the NGO Women for Peace
and two additional Reading and Learning Rooms will be opened in Khayelitsha in partnership with the programme
Violence Prevention through Urban Upgrading on 29 July.

The aim of these launches is to extend the work of the Cape Town Book Fair to communities that are often, though
circumstances beyond their control, to take part in events such as the CTBF. The Siemens Stiftung will be donating
Discovery Boxes for the Reading and Learning Rooms.

If you have children's books you would like to donate please bring them to the Children's Zone. If you would like to partner
with Litcam in this work go to www.litcam.org.

Industry News from South Africa:' Why is an AK (47) cheaper than a JK

(Rowling)?'

Calls are mounting for the South African government to scrap tax on books, especially school textbooks and library
books, to boost the country's appalling literacy rates.

Literacy activist Terry Bell has waged a long campaign to have tax on books scrapped, with support from public figures
including cartoonist Zapiro and satirist Pieter-Dirk Uys. Now lobby group Equal Education, and the official opposition party
the Democratic Alliance, are broaching the topic.
