I have a pretty good base set up, I go to chop some wood... and I find a treeguard, right outside my base.
How would I get rid of it? I don't have nearly enough gear and such to take it on. Am I screwed, or is
there some way of getting rid of it without taking too much damage? (My armor is a log suit... That's
how far into the game I am)

If you have some pinecones, you can plant them near the treeguard. This should calm it down, although
you'll have to plant around 6-12.

I've found the best thing to do is aggro it (attack it/get it to follow you) and then lead it far away from
your camp. Then, plant lots of trees using pine cones, the closer to the treeguard the better. This will
eventually pacify him and he'll turn back into a tree (though he will get up and walk around when he
feels like it/when you chop trees again nearby, this is why I said to lead him far, far away from your
camp).
That's the best way I found. As he's one of the strongest enemies in the game, I wouldn't even attempt to
take him down with a log suit/spear, you'll need more advanced weapony such as a fire staff or fire dart
to kill him safely from a distance. Even this takes ages though.
A low-tech way that works is to craft a torch, set fire to trees and then kite him through them, though
this obviously destroys those useful forests/plants. He'll set of fire for a short period, take damage, and
then you'll have to lead him through a burning tree again, repeat until dead. Again, this takes ages:P
They are slow and you can calm them by planting pine cones. Hit him once so that he chases you, lead
him far away from your base, then plant a bunch of pine cones and he will stay in that area.

When your creating your game you can edit your world and make them not appear

Basic armour and spear are easily enough, hit then dodge. He hits slow and is very easy to dodge.

Attack a beehive and let the angry bees chase you for a bit. When they give up (if the Treeguard is
nearby), they'll attack him, causing him to lose interest in you and attack the bees instead. Not only can
you destroy the beehive when the Treeguard is done murdering all of the bees, but you can pick up the
stingers/honey that they dropped, and the Treeguard won't attack you again unless you attack him or
you chop down a tree in his vacinity.
I think this is the best way to deal with a Treeguard, because if you keep him near your camp, he makes
an excellent guard from the hounds.:D
I'm pretty new to the game, got caught off guard when this guy spawned on me for the first time.
After a bit of kiting and attacking with no result (didn't realize how big his health pool was) I got clever
and set a nearby tree on fire then kited him through it. He took some time to burn, but it worked and
killed him. Unfortunately, he doesn't drop any living wood this way, just monster meat and ashes, but if
he's kicking your butt and you just need him dead this is the way to go.
A really simple and easy way to kill a treeguard is by making a simple campfire, then just walk around
it 10-15 times. He catches on fire by chase-ing you around:)

You can kite it to death if you're careful, but you should probably bring a log suit just in case.
With a spear and no armor, it just takes a couple of minutes of combat to kill. Dive in and get out
quickly, until it attacks you (and misses). If you attack it right after the miss, you have time for 4 attacks
before having to pull out again. You can attack it only 2 or 3 times to be in the safe side. Few attacks,
step away from it, let it miss its attack, rush in and attack again... repeat for a minute or two, and you
have easy living logs.
The real problem with treeguards are when they appear in groups, later in game. They are really easy
to kill one by one with a kite tactic.
Dart Monkey
It's pretty hard to kill those, but It might be managable if you get a giant army of rock lobsters or pigs.
easiest way is to play as woodie, chop a few trees, turn into werebeaver and kill (big) treeguard with
about 40 bites.what i did was go up to treeguard, bite 3 times, run away just far enough so it can't hit you
and repeat process until it dies.this way,you get to pick up the living logs.

4 bite,run,4 bite,run
Yeah the Treeguards start off being pretty damn intimidating especially the first time you think you are
going to stand there and tank it.
What everyone else is saying true. You walk up and hit it. Then, move about 2"-3" away and let it
swing. Then move back to it and swing 3-4 times (3 times if you are not great at timing, 4 if you don't
have an issue). Takes a while even with good weapons compared to other critters but they end up being
just a pest more than a threat.
If you have 2 of them on you it can be really tricky but then if you make a full campfire you can run
around it in circles (keeping them in the flames) and burn them to death in about 5 minutes or just do it
for about 4 minutes and finish them off with melee.

this post isn't just doing the same thing) as it just contributes badly to the wiki.

It's pretty easy to kill one actually, the biggest Treeguard I had to hit with my spear 41 times to kill him
(btw I had wood armour and a regular spear) so what you said should be good enough to take it on,
sorry I responded so late and you have probably died in that world right now.

stop lying it wont work!
He's talking about a campfire that's been overdosed with wood i.e. huge flames.

The easiest way I know of is planting pine cones in front of him. Each one raises the chance he will stop.
Also, to know which tree is a treeguard and which isn't, when you put your mouse over the tree with an
axe it will say "Attack" not "Chop."
If you have 2 treeguards, it is still possible to kite them both, just hit one of them until the other attacks
and repeat until the targeted one is down, then kite the other one.

That's true, but there have been a few times where a normal tree changed state in mid-chop, meaning I
was suddenly chopping a Treeguard. I think the general idea is to not make a thick forest of trees and
spread out plantings.

You think that's bad? I planted a treeguard inside my base.
I had three trees, that's it, just three, and I go to cut down two of them. Look away for a moment and I'm
almost dead because I was being attacked by a treeguard. A treeguard that I planted in my own base. I
didn't have a log suit, or even a spear. (I had gotten a slow start, I had just put down my firepit on day 5
because I couldn't find a good place to make camp)
Tooth traps are a workable solution. You can run up and plant them very close to him because he is so
slow and stops every 4-5 steps for a few seconds. It works but it takes a long time and lots of running
around. They have an insanity aura that is pretty damaging to the brain so you gotta keep moving.
Three or more traps at least.
A very easy way is to lead them into red butt beefalo herds, but again it takes awhile to lead them there
if the herd isn't close by.
Planting pine cones work to get them to stop chasing you and turn back into a tree. But the next day
they will get up and start walking around again. They won't be hostile anymore, but they can still
wander into your camp (eventually) and their aura drives you insane. They are mostly an aggravation
at that point. If you use the pine cone method then eventually there will be many of them wandering
around all over the map so it is definitely better to kill them if you can.
IMHO they aren't much of a threat. Honestly I think they are the silliest mobs in the game. I think they
have way too much health. I usually just turn them off or set them to less when I feel more
adventurous. Also they are more useful to have when you play smaller maps because there aren't as
many evil trees available in the forest to get the living logs from and so you need to get them from the
treeguards. On a big map they are just a pain to deal with.
