Observation 3:
a. Social Studies
II. Grade:
a. Kindergarten
III. Students:
a. 9 girls, 8 boys
IV. Setting:
a. Kindergarten classroom at The Learning Gate
b. Ages: 5-6 years old classroom, 17 students, 1 head teacher, 1 teacher aid
V. Pre-Observation:
a. I find social studies to be a very interesting topic to discuss with younger children.

I believe that its so much information given about any topic in the category for

their little heads. I decided to look up a few assignments to get an idea on how it

is given to the children. A few that I came upon wasnt to appealing and I knew it

wouldnt keep the childrens attention. I was prepared for the lesson and excited

to see how the kids I would react. During the Kindergarten year, students build

their understanding of the world through their experiences and literature. The

stories of ordinary and extraordinary people help describe the range and

continuity of human experience and introduce the concepts of courage, self-

control, determination, fairness, responsibility, leadership, heroism, and individual

responsibility. Learning how people live and work helps to develop their concept

of community and civic behavior.

VI. Analysis:
a. Mrs. Sharon started the morning with having the children stand up for the pledge

of allegiance. I thought that it was awesome because it got the children

questioning what they were going to do. After that, they sat down and she then

explained how we live in America and what our country was about. A lot of the

children were from different countries so it was interesting to see the children talk

about their country. She then went on to talk about how we have presidents and
who our past presidents then mentioned our new president. Once she said his

name the kids went crazy, I loved their input on him and they are only 5 or 6 years

old. They separated into groups and one group had to color the American flag

while the other group wrote what they would do if they were president. Their

responses were hilarious!

VII. Recommendations:
a. I really enjoyed the lesson and the kids loved it also. Mrs. Sharon got them up and

did something different from their morning routine. Even though I thought

everything was great I could have a recommendation for Mrs. Sharon. I would of

spoke about other topics in social studies. For example, how we came to America

and who were the first people here. Maybe, have the children act out as pilgrims

so they can experience what it was like. I would also recommend who the people

are on the coins, and how they were significant to America. Bringing some coins

in would get the children engaged too.

VIII. Post Observation:
a. After sitting in the lesson, I began to get ideas on how to teach social studies to

the younger children. I knew they would like getting up and acting as pilgrims of

the future president. I found a new interest in a new lesson that I can teach to the

children. Im glad that the children enjoyed the lesson and I know they learn a lot

of fun facts about America.
