PoliciesandProcedures

RehearsalsinSchool

Inordertoachieveasuccessfulrehearsal,studentsmustarriveontime.Studentsareto
warmupquietly,inamannerconducivetoappropriatementalandphysicalpreparation
fortherehearsal.Studentsareexpectedtohavetheirfolder/binderatallrehearsals.A
pencilisrequiredasapartoftheirdailyequipment.

The7-12thGradeBandclassmeetseveryotherdayduring9thperiod.The7-12thGrade
JazzBandrehearsalsareoptional,andwillstartduringthemonthofJanuarypending
interestandparticipation.

ConcertDress

Unlessotherwiseannounced,theconcertdressforALLmusicdepartmentperformances
isasfollows:AllblackattireORwhiteontopwithblackonthebottom.Dressesand
skirtsareacceptableiftheyareanappropriatelength.Pleasetrytowearniceshoesand
notsneakers.Itisalsoencouragedtowearatieifwearingadressshirt,butnot
necessary.Ifthereisachangeinconcertattirethebanddirectorwillsendhomealetter
statingsowithplentyofnotice.

WeeklyLessons

Musiclessonsaretreatedasthelabfor7-12thGradeBand.Eachstudentwillhavean
individualorsmallgrouplessonweeklyandthelessonsarearrangedaccordingtoa
rotatingschedule,sothatnostudentmissesthesameclasseachweek.Weeklylessons
arerequiredofallinstrumentalensemblemembers.Eachstudentwillbegivenacopy
oftheirscheduleand/oritwillbepostedbythebandroom.

1. Whenastudenthasalesson,he/shemustinformtheclassroomteachertheday
beforethelesson.Ifthestudentfailstodothis,he/sheisrequiredtoreportto
classfirstandinformhis/herteacher.
2. Astudentisrequiredtotakeanyoftheirexams/tests.Astheseareannouncedin
advance(inmostcases)itbecomesthestudentsresponsibilitytomakealternate
arrangementswithhis/hermusicteacherandclassroomteacher.
3. Thestudentshouldnotmissanyoneclassmorethantwiceduringeachtenweek
markingperiod.

Grading

Thegradesgivenforbandwillbeincludedinthestudentscumulativeacademic
average.Thebreakdownofthegradingpolicyforeachmarkingperiodisasfollows:

30%Lessons
30%Concerts/Performances
30%RehearsalParticipation
10%Assessments

Duringeach10weekmarkingperiodthestudentwillattendatleast9lessons.(This
accountsforholidays,midterm/finalschedules,andpossiblesnowdays.)Ofthese9
lessons,thebest8gradeswillbeusedtowardstheaverageforthatmarkingperiod.This
meanseachstudentreceivesonefreebielessonintheeventthattheyforgetthelesson,
orforgettomakethelessonup.Eachlessonisgradedona10pointscalebasedona
combinationofeffort,achievement,participation,andpreparation.

Duringeach10weekmarkingperiodthestudentwillalsoperforminatleast1concert
orperformance.Attendanceattheseperformancesisrequiredaspartofthecourse.
Missingscheduledconcerts/performances/paradeswillaffectastudentsabilityto
successfullyfulfilltherequirementsofthecourse.Suddenillnessorfamilyemergencies
areunderstandablybeyondthecontroloftheindividual.Insuchinstances,aphonecall
bytheparenttonotifythedirectorfollowedbyawrittenexcusearebothexpectedand
appreciated.Studentswhomissaperformancewithalegalexcusewillbegiventhe
opportunitytocompleteamake-upassignmentasassignedbythebanddirector.
Studentswhomissaperformancewithanunapprovedabsencewillbegivenazero
fortheevent.

Rehearsalparticipationisabi-weeklygradeenteredforeachstudent.Theparticipation
gradewillalwaysstartata100.Deductionsareonlytakenwhenproblematicbehaviors
areobservableduringdailyclassperiods.Deductionsarecommonlyrecordedfor
disruptions,inattentiveness,missingmaterials,repeatedtardiness,gum-chewingand
otherbehaviorswhichaffecttheentireclass.

Allassessmentswillbegradedoutofapossible100points.Onlyoneassessmentwillbe
giveneachmarkingperiod.Theassessmentswillbetakenduringabandlessonorclass.

AllStateandAllCountyMusicFestivals

Westronglyencourageparticipationincountyandstatefestivals.Thedistrictisafull
memberoftheSteubenCountyMusicTeachersAssociationwhichprovidesthe
opportunityforourstudentstoparticipateintheseevents.Thedistrictalsoprovides
transportationfortheseevents,insupportofourbeliefthatstudentscanbenefitfrom
theseuniqueexperiences.

Acceptanceintoafestivalisasignificantmusicalachievementandoneofwhichboth
studentandteachercanbeproud.However,itisonlythefirststep.Nextmustcomethe
responsibilityofthoroughpreparationofallparts.Studentsshouldseekhelpfromtheir
teacher.Studentsshouldparticipatewiththeproperattitude;theyshouldbinaframeof
mindthatpermitsthemtolearnandgrowasamusician,notworryingabouttheirstatus
orindividualrecognition.

Finally,ifastudentisunabletoattendallorpartofthefestivalduetoillness,emergency,
etc.,theymustcontactaBradfordmusicteacheratonce.Asageneralrule,theSteuben
CountyMusicTeachersAssociationwillnotallowastudenttoparticipatewhomustmiss
anyrehearsaltime.Thefestivaldatesmustbeclearedfromjob,family,orpersonal
commitmentsbeforeastudentauditions.Thedatesareasfollows:

PassPolicy

Pre-signedpassesmaybegivenfromthebanddirectorforpracticeinthebandroom.A
studentmaysign-outofstudyhallandcometothebandroomtopracticeiftheyhave
obtainedapre-signedpass.Passprivilegeswillberevokedifmisused.
