The subjects listed must meet ALL requirements set by the Alabama Fire College and Personnel & Education Commission. This official form (all

Communications-Radio

Donning Personal Protective Equipment

The ability to don self-contained breathing apparatus NFPA 1001, Standard for Fire Fighter
Professional Qualifications 5.3.1, 5.3.2, 5.3.3, 2013 Edition.

The candidate, wearing personal protective equipment, shall properly don a self-contained breathing apparatus,
and activate the PASS alarm. The candidate may use ONE of the following: Over-the-head method, Coat
method, or Seat Mount method.

1. Dons SCBA using one of the listed methods and ensures unit is secured and
adjusted properly

2. Dons face piece, attaches regulator (if using waist mount regulator, attaches
breathing tube to regulator) inhales activating regulator, holds breath for 5 seconds to
ensure there are no leaks CRITICAL POINT

3. Exhales forcefully to ensure exhalation valve is working properly-CRITICAL POINT


4. Dons hood, helmet, and gloves and ensures there is no exposed skin CRITICAL
POINT
5. Activate PASS alarm-CRITICAL POINT

Inspecting SCBA
SCBA is cleaned and maintained NFPA 1001, Standard for Fire Fighter Professional Qualifications,
5.3.1*, 5.5.1, 2013 Edition.

The candidate, given a self-contained breathing apparatus, shall demonstrate how to inspect and maintain this
unit according to manufacturers recommendations to ensure the SCBA is ready to use

Expected time to complete skill(s) is 3 minutes

Criteria/Performance Steps: Test Retest


Safely performs the following steps: P F P F
1. Checks that cylinder is at least 90% full
2. Checks that all gauges work. Cylinder & regulator gauge should read within 10% of
each other
3. Checks to see that low pressure alarm is in working condition CRITICAL POINT
4. Checks to ensure that all hose connections are tight & free of leaks
5. Checks to ensure that the face piece is in good condition & the straps are in the fully
extended position
6. Checks to ensure that the harness system is in good condition & that all straps are in
the fully extended position
7. Checks to ensure that all valves (e.g. bypass, mainline, exhalation) are operational.
Bypass valve should be fully closed. CRITICAL POINT
8. Checks cleanliness of unit

Changing an Air Cylinder
The ability to replace SCBA air cylinders NFPA 1001, Standard for Fire Fighter Professional
Qualifications, 5.3.1, 2013 Edition,

The candidate, wearing full personal protective equipment, shall demonstrate the proper procedure for changing a
SCBA air cylinder using the one person method. The candidate may use any SCBA unit available to his/her
department.

Expected time to complete skill(s) is 2 minutes

Criteria/Performance Steps: Test Retest


Safely performs the following steps: P F P F
1. Doffs unit using proper procedures
2. Closes cylinder valve on the used bottle and bleeds off pressure - CRITICAL POINT
3. Disconnects the high-pressure coupling from the cylinder and puts the hose coupling
on the ground directly in line with the cylinder outlet (ensures grit & liquids can not enter
the end of the unprotected high-pressure hose prior to attaching it to the cylinder outlet
valve)
4. Releases the cylinder clamp & removes the empty cylinder and places a new
cylinder into the backpack

5. Checks cylinder valve opening & the high-pressure hose fitting for debris and checks
condition of O-ring CRITICAL POINT

6. Connects high-pressure hose to cylinder valve opening and opens cylinder valve

7. Checks gauges on cylinder & regulator (ensures they are within 10% of each other)

Operating Portable Fire Extinguishers
Extinguish incipient Class A, B, and C fires with portable fire extinguishers NFPA 1001 Standard for
Fire Fighter Professional Qualifications, 5.3.16, 2013 Edition.

The candidate, wearing full protective equipment and given a selection of portable fire extinguishers, shall
extinguish a small Class A, B, OR C fire so that the correct extinguisher is chosen, the fire is completely
extinguished, and proper extinguisher handling techniques are followed.

1. Wears complete personal protective clothing
2. Identifies Class of fire (A,B,C)

3. Selects the correct fire extinguisher/agent (verbalizes disrupting electrical current


prior to extinguishing if it is a Class C fire)

4. Assures operation prior to using (fully charged and test fire extinguisher)
5. Uses P-A-S-S method
6. Extinguishes fire completely and backs away when retreating CRITICAL POINT

The ability to tie correct knots for hoisting equipment NFPA 1001, Standard for Fire Fighter

The candidate, given a fire service rope(s), shall tie the appropriate knot and hoist ONE of the following pieces of
equipment chosen by the Evaluator. Equipment: Pick Head Axe, Exhaust Fan, Uncharged Section of 1 or
1 , Charged Section of 1 or 1 , Roof Ladder, Pike Pole

Expected time to complete skill(s) is 7 minutes

NOTE TO EVALUATOR:
Pick Head Axe: figure eight on a bight & half hitch;
Exhaust Fan: figure eight follow through;
Uncharged Section of 1 or 1 : clove hitch & half hitch;
Charged Section of 1 or 1 : clove hitch & half hitch through the bale;
Roof Ladder: figure eight on a bight;
Pike Pole: clove hitch & 2 half hitches.
