Inspecting SCBA
SCBA is cleaned and maintained NFPA 1001, Standard for Fire Fighter Professional Qualifications,
5.3.1*, 5.5.1, 2013 Edition.

unit according to manufacturers recommendations to ensure the SCBA is ready to use

Changing an Air Cylinder
The ability to replace SCBA air cylinders NFPA 1001, Standard for Fire Fighter Professional
Qualifications, 5.3.1, 2013 Edition,
The candidate, wearing full personal protective equipment, shall demonstrate the proper procedure for changing a
SCBA air cylinder using the one person method. The candidate may use any SCBA unit available to his/her
department.
5. Checks cylinder valve opening & the high-pressure hose fitting for debris and checks
condition of O-ring CRITICAL POINT
6. Connects high-pressure hose to cylinder valve opening and opens cylinder valve
7. Checks gauges on cylinder & regulator (ensures they are within 10% of each other)

Operating Portable Fire Extinguishers
Extinguish incipient Class A, B, and C fires with portable fire extinguishers NFPA 1001 Standard for
Fire Fighter Professional Qualifications, 5.3.16, 2013 Edition.
The candidate, wearing full protective equipment and given a selection of portable fire extinguishers, shall
extinguish a small Class A, B, OR C fire so that the correct extinguisher is chosen, the fire is completely
extinguished, and proper extinguisher handling techniques are followed.
4. Assures operation prior to using (fully charged and test fire extinguisher)
5. Uses P-A-S-S method
6. Extinguishes fire completely and backs away when retreating CRITICAL POINT

Knots and Hoisting
The ability to tie correct knots for hoisting equipment NFPA 1001, Standard for Fire Fighter
Professional Qualifications, 5.1.2, 5.3.20, 2013 Edition.
The candidate, given a fire service rope(s), shall tie the appropriate knot and hoist ONE of the following pieces of
equipment chosen by the Evaluator. Equipment: Pick Head Axe, Exhaust Fan, Uncharged Section of 1 or
1 , Charged Section of 1 or 1 , Roof Ladder, Pike Pole
NOTE TO EVALUATOR:
Pick Head Axe: figure eight on a bight & half hitch;
Exhaust Fan: figure eight follow through;
Uncharged Section of 1 or 1 : clove hitch & half hitch;
Charged Section of 1 or 1 : clove hitch & half hitch through the bale;
Roof Ladder: figure eight on a bight;
Pike Pole: clove hitch & 2 half hitches.

rope according to manufacturers recommendations or department guidelines
3. Selects correct tool to clean rope (rope washer, front loading washing machine, hand
wash) according to manufacturers guidelines
4. Cleans rope, according to manufacturers guidelines and air dries completely before
storage
5. Removes any damaged rope from service and records in log

Search and Rescue
Conduct search and rescue operations as a member of a team NFPA 1001, Standard for Fire Fighter
Professional Qualifications, 5.3.5, 5.3.9, 2013 Edition.
AFC & PSC
The candidate, wearing PPE including SCBA, shall demonstrate entering a simulated burning and smoke filled
environment, conduct search operations and locate and remove victims if found. The room(s) should be large
enough to conduct proper search techniques.

The candidate, wearing PPE, shall demonstrate proper victim removal techniques using ONE of the following
techniques: extremity carry, seat carry, or blanket drag method. Other assistants will be made available if
applicable. The candidate shall give orders and directions when moving the victim.
5. Stands with other rescuer using proper lifting techniques & carries patient to safety.
SEAT CARRY
1. Rescuers face each other and grasp own right forearm just above wrist
2. Rescuers then grasp each others left forearm and kneel onto ground with one knee
3. Victim is instructed to sit on rescuers joined arms and rescuers communicate to lift
victim
4. Stands with other rescuer using proper lifting techniques & carries patient to safety.
The candidate, wearing PPE shall demonstrate proper victim removal techniques using ONE of the following
techniques: extremity carry, seat carry, or blanket drag method. Other assistants will be made available if
applicable. The candidate shall give orders and directions when moving the victim.
BLANKET DRAG
1. Positions blanket next to victim ensuring it extends above victims head
2. Kneels on victims side opposite the blanket & rolls victim against knees
3. Pulls blanket against victim & allows victim to roll back onto blanket
4. Wraps blanket around victim
5. Drags victim to safety by pulling the end of the blanket at the victims head.

The ability to clean and inspect fire hose NFPA 1001, Standard for Fire Fighter Professional
Qualifications, 5.5.2, 2013 Edition.
The candidate, given washing equipment, water, detergent, tools, and replacement hose gaskets shall wash and
inspect fire hose according to the manufactures recommendations for any damage and to ensure hose is in a
ready state for service.
2. Inspects couplings on hose ensuring that swivels operate and threads are not
damaged
3. Demonstrates replacing hose coupling gasket
4. Cleans hose jacket using brooms, brushes, clear water, and soap for areas of heavy
contamination
5. Inspects hose jacket ensuring there are no defects or damage (holes, tears, or
chemicals/fuel)
6. If hose is found to be defective, marks out of service and records
7. Dries hose using hose tower, drying rack, or other means (keeps out of direct
sunlight and high heat devices for drying)

5. Uses a Dutchman where appropriate
