This information provides the proper procedure to check the camshaft for wear and damage
on Volvo D11, D13 and D16 engines.

Remove the valve cover from the engine. Refer to group
21 for service procedures.

Install the engine turning tool.

Turn the camshaft using the cranking tool. Check the
camshaft lobes for wear and any damage to the camshaft
surfaces.

Note: Unevenness can develop on cam lobe surfaces


during normal operation. This does not mean the
camshaft must be changed.

These figures show examples of scoring that will not
affect engine operation. Camshafts with this type of
scoring do not need to be replaced.

These figures show examples of a camshaft with material
damage. The camshaft should not be reused. Replace
the rocker arms that roll on the damaged cam lobes when
the camshaft is replaced.

Install the valve cover. Refer to Function Group 21 for
