TAIPEI HANDBOOK TRAVEL GUIDE

National
Palace
Museum

Home to the worlds largest and arguably finest collection of Chinese art, this vast
collection covers treasures in painting, calligraphy, statuary, bronzes, lacquerware,
ceramics, jade and religious objects. To reach the museum from Shilin MRT station,
head out exit 1 to Zhongzheng Rd and catch R30 (red 30), minibus 18 or 19, or bus
255, 304 or 815. It is about 15 minutes to the museum.

Taipei
101

Towering above the city like the gigantic bamboo stalk it was designed to resemble,
Taipei 101 is impossible to miss. At 508m, Taipei 101 held the title of worlds tallest
building for a number of years. Until 2011 it held the title of the worlds tallest green
building. To get to Taipei 101 take the Red Line to Taipei 101 station. Alternatively,
take the Blue Line to Taipei City Hall Station, then walk south to enter the Shin Kong
Mitsukoshi complex towards 101. Being as tall as it is, you will definitely see it along
the skyline.

Shilin
Night
Market

The Shilin Night Market in Taipei is one of the largest and the most popular night
markets in Taiwan. Many of Taiwans traditional foods can be found for reasonable
prices from the friendly locals such as Giant Fried Chicken Steak, Tempura, Bubble Tea,
Oyster Vermicelli Oyster Omelet, Fried Buns and Stinky Tofu. To reach there, take the
Red Line to Jiantan Station, not Shilin Station. After leaving Exit 1, diagonally cross the
street to the left to enter the night market.

Chiang
Kai-Shek
Memorial Hall

This grandiose monument to authoritarian leader Chiang Kai-shek is a popular

attraction and rightly so. It is a sobering feeling standing in the massive courtyard.
Chiangs blue-roofed hall is a prime example of the neoclassical style, favoured by
CKS as a counterpoint to the Cultural Revolutions destruction of real classical culture
in China. Take Red Line or Green Line to Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall, sometimes
labeled as C.K.S. Memorial Hall to get there
