Creative Media Production

Music Video

Production Team: Manav Thaker and Harley Swadling

Title of Production: a.PROZAC - Raindrops (Prod. BlckHry)
Brief
Concept: Our chosen concept is a music video specifically inspired by old school 80s
and 90s hip-hop videos. Which will be for a song produced by two fellow students and
friends

Whom are we producing it for: Pioneering artists of the hip-hop genre, Wu-Tang Clan
and N.W.A produced many of their early videos independently. These early
production teams are the people we have decided to produce our music video for.
These productions largely produced by the artists themselves were extremely
influential and helped shape the hip-hop genre into what we know it as today. These
videos were low budget and simple in approach, however they have still managed
to achieve great success and help further the careers of the artists themselves. For
example, the Straight out of Compton video, which has over 55 million views on
YouTube, or Wu-Tangs C.R.E.A.M which has over 30 million. The rapper of our song is
a.PROZAC a.k.a Archie Lennard and the producer of the song is Blckhry a.k.a Harry
Reader. Both of them have a small Soundcloud following of over 400 people each
and they consistently upload new music to the streaming platform. They have worked
together numerous times to create songs, which have gained over 2000 views each.

Why we are creating this production: We are both very passionate about music and
the industry as a whole. Also the music video unit earlier this year was one that I hoped
I had done better in and thought I could improve lots to create a very good video.
Also having two friends who make music to a good standard has given us the
opportunity to make something original and allows us lots of room for creativity.
Overall, I have chosen the music video option for my final major project because I
feel I have the ability to achieve a good grade whilst also being able to enjoy the
work at the same time. My passion for music will drive me work harder and more
efficiently. Some skills that I have which will help me get a good grade include a good
attention to detail. This is useful because a music video is a visual representation of a
song and it is relatively short so I will need to make sure every moment captured on
camera is vital and adds to the overall production. In addition, my ability to work well
with a teammate will be helpful. I can communicate with them in order to ensure we
are working well with each other to achieve our ultimate goal. If I am to achieve a
good grade, I must be sure to be meticulous in my planning and research, to make
sure I am fully prepared before filming. This includes exploring new ways I can capture
footage/shots during pre-production. Also being organised by staying on top of all of
the work, making sure my partner and myself do not fall behind and taking initiative
and making sure I hire out all equipment I need. Finally, I am hoping that by creating
a professional and good-looking video we can help promote the careers of the artists
who made it, because a music video can help open lots of doors when it comes to
popularity and exposure, especially if we are going to release it on YouTube, which is
the second largest search engine behind Google.

Items required for the project: For this production, we will be required to complete a
number of stages for planning, research and production. All of these result in four
separate learning objectives. Specifically these include, a comprehensive and
informative brief, professional and thorough research both primary and secondary
covering our chosen medium, genre, artists/professionals, target audience and
platforms. Objective 3 asks us to complete all pre-production and planning with
evidence. Next, is the actual finished production and lastly is the evaluation process.
All of these stages are extremely important to us if we wish to achieve a good grade.
The first part, which is the brief, allows us to fully understand what is being asked of us
and to highlight our ideas and ambitions. The next section, which is all of the research
and planning, helps us to understand our production; we will gain inspiration from
previous works and advice from our classmates as we conduct both primary and
secondary research. Without the research part of our production, we would be blind
as to the direction of our music video. Next is the pre-production stage which include
props list, crew list, shooting script, production schedule, contingency plans etc. All of
these we have been required to make for previous production and the importance
of them seems obvious. Without these, we would not be able to shoot efficiently or
effectively. Finally, we have to pitch our idea to members of staff which is very
important because it makes sure we have complete understanding of what we want
to achieve and how we are going to do it.

Team Members and roles:

Manav Thaker Camera and filming/Props

Harley Swadling Producer and Editor/Locations

My role: In this production, I am responsible for the filming and camera work as well
as directing the mise-en-scene specifically the props. My direct responsibilities will
include making sure we capture and good variety of shots and camera angles, to
explore ways in which we can make our video stand out visually. To achieve this I must
first communicate with my team member about the locations of our filming, I will then
visit these locations before our scheduled time to shoot and assess how I can capture
exciting and visually pleasing shots. This will take time and careful planning which I
must ensure I complete to a high standard. I will also be setting the mood of our video
since I am in charge of what is shown on camera and what is not, also the props that
appear in certain places. For this, I must source each prop or piece of clothing prior
to filming and make sure it fits well into the narrative and mise-en-scene. I not only
complete this practical part of the project but also the planning and research
separately from my partner. I will need to conduct research on lighting and perhaps
using other lenses or filters to add effect. It will be my responsibility to be fully prepared
and equipped to produce a high-level music video.

My ambitions: This opportunity I have been given to produce and media production
is especially exciting for me. This is because I know I am lucky enough to have great
resources and knowledge available to me, allowing me to create something I am
proud of. As well as this, I hope to create something good enough to further the
careers of the artists who produced the song and the fact that they are friends is
exciting. I am looking forward to being able to highlight my understanding of filming
techniques as well as showing a good level of creativity to produce something that
can be admired. Also proving that I have the ability to research to an excellent
standard and show I can hit deadlines. Some new skills I hope to pick up include the
ability to use specific camera angles to add certain effects. I also hope that I can
learn more about editing from my partner. Finally, I want to help promote my friends
music by creating a video that they will be able to gain recognition from.
