Lesson idea implementation:

The teacher will introduce the study of American Symbols using the Brain Pop Jr. video, Abraham Lincoln.
Prior to displaying the video, the teacher will ask students questions about Abraham Lincoln- Do you know
who Abraham Lincoln is. What information do you know about Abraham Lincoln? Why is he important in
American History? Then, the teacher will ask students to remember one new fact about Abraham Lincoln
after they view the video.
After viewing the video, students will be encourages to share the new facts about Abraham Lincoln. The
teacher will list these facts on the anchor chart. If enough facts are not collected to match the number of

students in the class, the teacher will break students into small groups where they will re-visit the video using
the iPads. Each group will remember two more facts for the anchor chart.
Once compiled each student can select one of the facts about Abraham Lincoln. The teacher will record
each student as they tell their fact. The recording will be finalized into a podcast on the classroom blog for
others to enjoy.
Optional extension: students will repeat the research process on a different American Symbol. Using
another BrainPop Jr. video, students will create a podcast on that topic.
