Childs/Childrens Name/s: All Children in the Pre-School Room

Date: April 6, 2017

What is the learning focus?

Literacy: Oral Language and Numeracy
What is the experience?
Learning to count Mandarin from 1 to 10
Why am I planning this experience?
(link to observations and/or family information and/or evaluation of previous experience)
I am planning this experience as there are many Mandarin speaking children as their home
language and they would be an activity to explore diversity. Also, from an experience, where Child A,
B, C and D was playing. Child B was doing a counting down in Mandarin as part of their play.
What resources do I need?
Mandarin Speaking Children, if none would volunteer use Ipad to engage children.
What do I need to do to ensure that this experience meets health and safety requirements?
Not applicable
When is the best time, place and grouping for this experience?
Group time while transitioning to lunch
How will I interact with the child/children to scaffold their learning?
Ask the children who knows how to speak in Mandarin then ask if they can teach them to
their friends.
How did it go?
I asked the children who could speak Mandarin. A, B, C, D and E all raised their hands. I then asked
C&Dif they can teach their friends to count in Mandarin.

C and D agreed and they stood in front of their classmates.

Me: Okay now, C, Dcan you count 1-10 in Mandarin?

C&D: EEE, er, san, si, wu, liao, chi, bah, jeou, shir
Me: Can you do it again, slowly this time
C&D (Counting again slower)
Me: Now everyone, can we start counting?
The Mandarin speaking children were counting it and the other children were not responsive.

Educator (Liana): Maybe we can do it one by one

Me: Okay we should start One is what Cherrie?
C: EEEE
Me: Can we all say it?
All: EEE
Me: Next? What is two?
C&D: Err
All: Er
Me: Next
C&D: San
All: San
Me: Next?
C&D: Si

Some children where responsive and others were not.

Me: Child B can you say si?

Child B: Si
Me: Child E?
Child E: Si
Me: A can you say, Si?
A: Si
Me: Whats next?
C, D: Wu
All: Wu
C&D Liao
Me: Liao?

We managed to count up to 8 but the 9 and 10 in mandarin was hard for those who does not speak
Mandarin.

What changes did I observe in the child/children?

Outcome 1: Children have a strong sense of identity Children develop a sense of belonging
to groups and communities and active community participation. This evident when children
were responsive to the activity.
Outcome 2: Children are connected with and contribute to their world. Children responds to
diversity with respect. This was evident when the children were participating in learning to
count in Mandarin
Outcome 3: Children have a strong sense of well being. This was evident when C&D were
willing to teach their friends to count in Mandarin. They were demonstrating their
confidence in their home language
Outcome 4: Children are confident and involved learners Children transfer and adapt what
they have learned from one context to others. This was evident when the children were
repeating what C&D were saying.
Outcome 5: Children are effective communicator Children interact verbally and non-
verbally with others for a range of purposes. This was evident when the children would be
following C&D.
What will I do next to follow on from this experience to support the childs/childrens
learning/development/dispositions/relationship?

Literacy: Learning more essential words in mandarin. When children would be engaged in the home
corner, questioning for the translation of an item to Mandarin could be helpful. I am planning to
make the home corner a restaurant as an extension for their interest in cooking. Will be asking
children to make their own logo and ask what type of food will be served. Here some Mandarin
words can be included.
Creative Arts: The design of the logo
Maths: Continue to count in Mandarin and introduce the concept of prices for the food that we are
selling.
