People who live in areas
with more birds, shrubs
and trees are less likely to have
depression, anxiety and stress. Thats
the finding of new research from
the University of Exeter. Those who
spent less time outdoors were more
likely to report poor mood, too,
and apparently seeing our feathered
friends in the afternoon is particularly
beneficial. The results held true
even after researchers allowed for
variables such as income and age.
This comes hot on the heels of
other UK research which found that
watching birds makes people feel
relaxed. So why not invest in a bird

your coffee breaks looking at that,

We often joke about OCD, but its a serious condition. (nathalie

Heres how to recognise and treat it, in yourself and others
P
eople will sometimes
refer to themselves
as being a bit OCD,
but that undermines the
seriousness of true OCD (obsessive
compulsive disorder). If you have this
condition, it really disrupts your life.
You may feel panicky and carry out
compulsions much of the time its
not just about neat kitchen shelves.
In OCD, you have obsessive
thoughts with a compulsion to carry
out behaviours to control them. At its
root, OCD is a fear of causing harm
to yourself or others. The best-known
example is the form that causes a fear of
contamination so someone might wash
their hands hundreds of times a day to
get rid of germs. Thats well recognised
as its something people can see. But
others might have obsessions they may
try to control in their minds or with less
obvious behaviours. So someone might
obsess when driving that theyve run
someone over, and go back repeatedly
to check. Others may have obsessions
related to their ethical, moral or sexual
values, and have unwanted intrusive
thoughts they try to control.
OCD is actually a coping mechanism
for obsessional anxiety. Most people
know their thoughts arent rational, but
cant stop having to carry out behaviours
that help them feel temporarily calmer.
Theres an element of uncertainty you
may know your thoughts dont make
sense, but you cant take the chance.
At the root
So what causes OCD? Its probably
a combination of different factors.

Organic sun creams use mineral filters to reflect

BEAUTIFUL
BY NATURE
Natural, free from, organic
these words have always been
integral to healthys beauty philosophy,
and now it looks like the rest of the world
is catching up. In the past year alone,
sales of organic beauty have bloomed to
61.2 million (an increase of 13 per cent)
according to a Soil Association report.
Natural ingredients have also risen
in popularity, including vitamin C
(85 per cent), fruit-based ingredients
(78 per cent) and probiotics (72 per

CEREAL KILLER
Getting up early could be
the key to resisting sugary
breakfast cereals like this. A new
US study compared morning types
with evening types, looking at
data from nearly 2000 randomly
chosen people. It found those
with a later-set body clock ate
more sucrose in the morning, more
sucrose, fat and saturated fatty acids
in the evening, and less protein
overall. The differences were even
more pronounced at the weekend,
with night owls eating at random
times and tucking in to grub twice as
often as larks. They also had poorer
sleep and were less active. A reason
to train your brain to love mornings!

Scrap the pan pipes: spa music is evolving, and its rhythms and
tempos are being carefully crafted to take you to your happy place
WORDS ANNA CRANE
E
ver wondered how spas decide which
soundtrack to play while youre enjoying
a relaxing massage? Or, perhaps youve
found the choice distinctly unrelaxing.
If so, youre probably not alone. The biggest mistake
spas make is to use clichd music, says Rob Wood,
creative director and founder of music agency, Music
Concierge, which designs soundtracks tailored
to spas and hotels. And relying on a busy therapist
to choose a CD is the first step to getting it wrong.
However, the tide is turning away from traditional
whale music. With over 400,000 tracks in its library,
Music Concierge caters for spas savvy enough
to realise this such as the ESPA Life at Corinthia
Hotel, London, for which they created an ethereal,
futuristic soundtrack in keeping with its cocoon-like,
subterranean setting. Many spas are, finally, starting
to find their own groove, as increasingly sophisticated
clients demand more thoughtful tunes to complement
their ayurvedic facial or sports massage.
Guests are smarter now and know what they
want when planning a spa day, says Brad Pressman
president of Private Label Music, which supplies the
music to 263 spas worldwide. His verdict on the
spa tunes of the past 30 years? Bland bland bland! No wind chimes and whale

in lifts or shopping malls, it has been designed to
go largely unnoticed, but still take you to a serene
spot preferably in the mood for splashing your
cash on post-treatment lotions and potions.
Most spas still play it safe by choosing what is
expected, says Jeremy McCarthy, group director
of spa and wellness at The Mandarin Oriental
Hotel Group, and author of The Psychology Of Spas
