UMPQUA VALLEY
Located just 97 miles north of Medford, the
Umpqua Valley is home to many of Southern
Oregons most-celebrated and award-
winning wineries and some of the states most
picturesque scenery. With the city of Roseburg
anchoring the region, the Umpqua Valley offers
30 wineries, ready to share their liquid treasures!
Stretching 65 miles from end-to-end and 25
miles across, the valley is dominated by gently
rolling hillsides and smaller inter-connected
mountain ranges, earning it the nickname, the
Hundred Valleys of the Umpqua.
In a word, the grape growing climate is diverse,
and includes several micro-climate zones. The
Umpqua Valley is drier and warmer than the
Willamette Valley to the north and cooler than
the Rogue and Applegate Valleys to the south,
resulting in an amazing array of fruit thats
crafted into must-taste wines.
In addition to wine, outdoor enthusiasts will
discover some of the best fishing, boating,
rafting and hiking in the state of Oregon.
The famed Umpqua River, which flows from
northeast of Roseburg to Winchester Bay
on the Oregon Coast, provides 111 miles of
breathtaking scenery as well as a watershed that
supports a variety of agricultural production,
not the least of which is wine grapes.

of Oregon Pinot Noir

by MJ DASPIT

T his year marks the 50th-anniversary of the first commercially-

released vintage of Pinot Noir in Oregon. Only 200 cases were made
by the Umpqua Valleys Richard Sommer from his HillCrest estate grapes
harvested in 1967. Of those 200 cases, only one case remains, carefully
preserved by present HillCrest owners Dyson and Susan DeMara.
As officially commemorated by Oregon House Resolution 4-A in 2011,
Sommer was the first to plant Pinot Noir in Oregon in 1961. DeMara, who
acquired HillCrest from Sommer in 2003, explains that Sommer propagated
cuttings obtained in 1959 from Louis Martinis famous Stanley Ranch,
previously known as Talcoa Vineyard, the first vineyard planted in Napa
Valley. Two years later, after the vines had rooted, Sommer transplanted
them to establish his vineyard. The House Resolution goes on to credit
Sommer with being the first in Oregon to use stainless steel tanks for
fermentation, an innovation he introduced in 1963, and the first to bottle a
commercial Pinot Noir in 1967.
What do we know about the quality of Sommers 1967 Pinot Noir? The
fruit was not of a specific clone. Clone notation was not in use at that time;
rather, different strains of fruit were distinguished by selection, a term used
to denote plant material sourced from random vines of a great vineyard. Its
like a bouquet of different flowers versus a single flower, DeMara explains.
Sommers fruit was of Stanley Ranchs highly-prized Martini selection.
DeMara relates a story told by the founder of the legendary Oregon wine
distributor, Henny-Hinsdale, who dropped into the HillCrest tasting room
over Thanksgiving weekend, 2016. This man is about 75-years-old. He and
his wife walk into the tasting room and he says, Im Mr. Hinsdale. I said, Oh
my God, of Henny-Hinsdale? Youre a legend! Hinsdale was the distributor
for Sommer, David Lett and Charles Coury as well as for the French house
Domaine Drouhin, a prominent Burgundy producer. Hinsdale asked Robert
Drouhin if hed be willing to do a tasting of some new Oregon wines that
he repped. So in 1970, Hinsdale had a tasting at his house and all those
gentlemen were there. Drouhin said the 67 Pinot he tasted from HillCrest
was the first American Pinot Noir that tasted like Burgundy to him. He said
the wine tasted like Monthelie and thats what made him decide to come to
Oregon over California. Domaine Drouhin Oregon was indeed established
in the Dundee Hills in 1987.
DeMara remembers his own first encounter with Sommers 1967 Pinot.
He came across some bottles a few years back when cleaning-out an old egg
barn. Sitting on the tailgate of a pickup truck to taste the wine, DeMara was
amazed that it was still very drinkable, still showing some fruit.
So how will HillCrest Pinot Noir show at 50? DeMara plans to open a
bottle with a few invited guests this fall at the start of harvest at HillCrest.
Id like to keep as much of the 67 vintage as I can for the future. But having
said that, Id also like to commemorate the significance of what Richard
Sommer did for Oregon and American wine. Well christen the harvest and
then have a very special dinner.
To mark this special anniversary year, the 2017 HillCrest Pinot Noir will
have the original label that Sommers pioneering 1967 Pinot Noir wore. A
charity auction of one of the famous 1967 bottles is also in the works. How
much will a connoisseur pay to add such a unique bottle to his collection?
That remains to be seen. As Dyson says, Its an amazing thing today to
have one of only 12 bottles of the first Oregon Pinot Noir ever commercially
produced in Oregon.

SOMM Camps bring certified sommeliers to different winegrowing regions of the treated like family. It was amazing to see how the community banded together to
world to experience the terroir of the place, and to meet local winemakers and share their stories and passion for the region. The Umpqua Valley has more to offer
winegrowers. Organized by the Big Three: Abacela Winery, Brandborg Vineyard than wine, it has beautiful scenery, amazing food, and even better people.
& Winery, and Reustle-Prayer Rock Vineyards, the event gave the Somms a unique
opportunity to meet with scions of the Umpqua Valley wine industry, in particular
Earl Jones, Terry Brandborg, and Stephen Reustle.
Over the ensuing four days, campers sipped almost countless wines from nine
Umpqua Valley vineyards and wineries, toured much of the region, and enjoyed
gourmet meals featuring locally-sourced ingredients. Here are some of the highlights:
True Kitchen + Bar
Voted the #1 Fine Dining Restaurant in Douglas Co.
Climatologist Greg Jones gave an overview of the regions unique climate and
terroir. Jones explained that Southern Oregon is unique among winegrowing
regions in number of varieties that grow here (70), in the length of its growing
season (175 days from bud break to harvest) and in its 32 diurnal temperature
swings in August and September. Stephen Reustle noted, Cold nights preserve
acidity in the grapes, while hot summer days enhance aromatics in the wine.
Campers participated in a blind tasting billed, Umpqua vs. the World, featuring
six blind flights: Gewrztraminer, Grner Veltliner, Albario, Pinot Noir, Syrah,
and Tempranillo. Each flight included three wines made by one of the Big Three;
the fourth was a European sleeper. Campers had to decide which ones were not
made in the Umpqua. The best score was four out of six.
The Somms also visited the 550 acre Blue Heron Vineyards, the largest
vineyard in Douglas County. Vineyard managers Teal and Taylor Stone provided
a short explanation of vineyard operations, and gave the sommeliers an
opportunity to try their hands at shoot thinning.
Based on their comments, the Somms enjoyed their time in the Umpqua
Valley. Mike Pickering, Sommelier for the Marriott Marquis San Diego Marina,
has a special connection to Brandborg: he shared a bottle of 2006 Brandborg
Pinot Noir with his bride-to-be on their first date. Pickering described his
experience, saying I love visiting under the radar regions like Umpqua because
there isnt any pretense; the experience is a lot more welcoming than, say, going
to Napa. To really be able to pick the winemakers brain about on-site location,
terroir, and wine making techniques shows that there is a lot of talent in the area,
and I cant wait to watch the area evolve.

This year, Im gonna kick it up a notch, says Gabriel Murphy.
elanguestsuites.com Planter boxes perched on the West Main Street buildings balcony will boast
tomatoes, eggplant and strawberries, says Murphy. They join pots arrayed in
aromatic herbs beckoning diners to the restaurants front entrance.
Its beautiful, says Murphy. And its cool to see the cooks out there picking the

Southern Oregons natural beauty and quality of life compelled Murphy
Fine dining a decade ago to put down roots as a restaurateur after years of traveling. A
culinary internship in Italy also acquainted him with French and German
in the heart of cooking techniques and traditions. He brought those influences back to the West
Coast, where he worked in several California kitchens and opened two Eugene
wine country establishments before returning home to share his gourmet passion.
I was really trying to do the whole romantic, food-family thing.
Recalling late-1800s and early-1900s romance, Gogis had attained status as
one of the regions fine-dining mainstays more than a decade before the Murphys
purchased it in 2007. Growing along with the brothers reputation for fine wine and

cuisine, the family garden has supplied Gogis since their first year at the helm.
As business has grown, weve increased the size of the garden each year, says
Gabriel Murphy.
On the same time line, Murphy says, Southern Oregon wines increased in number
and variety. From albarino to zinfandel, Oregon wines dominate the Gogis list. The
majority hail from the nearby Applegate Valley, Bear Creek and Upper Rogue areas.
We get new, local wines every year, says Murphy.
Bold reds from the Applegates Plaisance Ranch intensify braised lamb shanks
deep savor, says Jonoah Murphy, who manages the Gogis dining room and beverage
service. The rich and sweet notes of salmon with strawberry-balsamic syrup are
balanced by crisp sauvignon blanc from Kriselle Cellars of the Upper Rogue, he says.
Local wines aside, ingredients provenance isnt prominent on the Gogis menu, and
the business website makes a modest mention of the Murphy farm. Acknowledging that
small-scale agriculture in the service of a single restaurant isnt necessarily cost-effective,
Gabriel Murphy says they do it for the same reason you bake your own bread.

Wine Country Sipping & Supping
by SARAH LEMON

64 SOUTHERN OREGON WINE SCENE / SUMMER 2017

S ipping and supping to sounds of live music at vineyards and tasting rooms is
Southern Oregons alternative to a night (or day) on the town.
You can relax and not hop from one place to another, says Porscha Schiller,
marketing director and tasting-room manager for South Stage Cellars.
The Jacksonville tasting room is among dozens locally that headline food infused
with live music. Wine n Dine Wednesdays and Sip n Supper Saturdays bring
specialties from Jacksonvilles C St. Bistro and Medfords Pomodori Ristorante to
tables at South Stage for just $10 per plate. Musical acts whet patrons appetites at
the one-stop hot spot for eating, drinking and enjoying a show.
We also support artistswe never take a commission, says Schiller. That
provides art, wine, food and musichow do you go wrong with that?
Such collaborations hit the right note for numerous local wineries and tasting
rooms. The regions diverse field of musicianseager to play lower-key venues earlier
in the eveninggive small-scale concerts all summer where wine sets the stage.
Vineyards and wineries are generally pretty places with more positive energy,
says Jeff Kloetzel. Ive never seen a fist-fight at a winery.
Playing bars for twenty years in Hawaii, Kloetzel renounced that scene when he
relocated to Southern Oregon in 2010. He says hes since seen the number of local
tasting rooms more than double, and hes played guitar and sung at almost all of
them at least once.
Thats certainly been a real blessing to the local music world, he says. Its sort of
been a perfect storm for this valley.
The broad base of local talent warrants more than one show, usually from 6 to
8pm, per week at many wineries during their busy season. Schedules typically are
posted to winery websites and social-media pages, along with information about
food vendors, including locally-operated food trucks.
The lineup, says RoxyAnns tasting room manager and events coordinator Brenda
Walden-Pine, can fulfill customers expectations for the entire evening or function
as the launch pad for more fun.
Its a great place for friends to meet up and not be out so late.
Live music at RoxyAnn took root at an erstwhile farmers market before
expanding into a Friday evening concert series. After several spates of inclement
weather prompted musicians to move into the propertys barn, Walden-Pine
realized the potential for year-round gigs.
It kind of exploded from there, she says. It kind of became band-central. Jeff Kloetzel

most of whom are eager to dance. Wednesday evenings welcome slower-paced,
softer-toned soloists and, once per quarter, karaoke is popular with families.
The laid-back ambiance, admittedly, appeals to adults middle-aged and older and
also to kids, say tasting-room staff. Yet Schiller says she serves 20-somethings in
increasing numbers, whose wine appreciation also is on the rise.
Theyre kind of slowing down on the cocktails, she says, adding that changing
demographics likely will propel the local music scene toward still more genres.
We have this huge spectrum of music.
Guitarist and vocalist Liz Jones agrees: We have everything from flamenco to
jazz to folk to bluegrass.
On the "playful eclectic side," Jones three-piece band, Savanna, performs almost
exclusively at wineries, most regularly at Belle Fiore, DANCIN and Wooldridge
Creek. She also plays as a duo at Paschal Winery and Weisinger Family Winery
and solo at Caprice Vineyards. Liz admits that her absolute favorite gigs are as a
trio with Savanna bandmates Anna Christensen on percussion and vocals and Bob
Rawlings on upright bass and vocals.
Wineries seem to love our brand of tasteful, popular music that pleases
everyone," she adds. "Live music brings a very present, vibrant energyit's a real
win-win for musicians and wineries."
The success of musicians, says Al Silbowitz of Grizzly Peak, often strikes a
stronger chord than wine sales. Crowds as large as 400 gather on Friday evenings,
all summer-long for concerts in the Ashland estates oak grove. Organizers
follow the citys noise ordinance, comply with music-industry copyright laws and
compensate bands appropriately, says Silbowitz.
Somebody has to be able to help musicians support themselves.
Jones and Kloetzel both credit wineries with nurturing more musical talent that, Savanna with Liz Jones (far right)
in turn, enhances the regions quality of life.
I think the wine and music pairing, says Kloetzel, is such a natural thing.
