A LITTLE HISTORY

COZUMEL

This island has a rich history and the people from Cozumel
are faithful guardians of their cultural traditions. During
the 3rd century D.C. Maya groups came from Petn, regin I S L A N D O F
of northern Guatemala. And in some places of the island
S W A L L O W S
there are vestiges of this culture, especially in the 7th
century AD, during the Late Classic period, the Mayan-
putunes migrated from southern Campeche and Tabasco to
Cozumel, changing the social organization, the architecture
and the religin. Cozumel became an important stop on the
coastal trade route that extended from the Gulf of Mexico to
the Central American Caribbean coastal towns.
