Anhydrous hydrogen fluoride is a dangerous chemical when handled improperly. For safety information and handling
recommendations, please contact Solvay Fluorides at www.solvaychemicals.us.

PHYSICAL PROPERTIES

Anhydrous hydrogen fluoride (AHF) is a colorless liquid corrosive, and has a sharp and penetrating odor. AHF vapor
reacts with the moisture in the atmosphere to form a visible dense cloud.
Hydrofluoric acid in liquid or vapor form is extremely dangerous and burns skin, eyes and mucous membranes. ANY
exposure requires immediate first aid and medical attention. For further information on first aid and medical
procedures, request our current publication.

CHEMICAL PROPERTIES
Hydrofluoric acid reacts with metals located up to hydrogen in the Electrochemical Table of Metals to form fluoride
salts. It also reacts with metal carbonates, oxides and hydroxides.

Tetra silicon fluoride and fluorosilicic acid are formed when hydrofluoric acid reacts with silicon and silicic acid.

Hydrofluoric acid attacks glass. HF aqueous solutions are better handled in the laboratory using polyethylene and
polypropylene containers.

Anhydrous hydrogen fluoride reacts with olefins to produce organic fluorides and with halogenated organic
compounds to produce fluorinated organic compounds. AHF forms stable complexes with metallic fluorides and also
acts as a catalyst in reactions that involve formation of carbon-carbon links.

Hydrofluoric acid may produce considerable heat when it is diluted into water and requires a cooling process for
preparation of dilutions.

Technical Data Sheet

Hydrogen fluoride forms a constant boiling point mixture with water at 37.73 weight percentage and 111.4 C (232
F).

EXPLOSION OR FIRE DANGER

Hydrofluoric acid is not flammable but is difficult to contain since it corrodes many substances.
AHF corrosive action with moisture present could result in formation of hydrogen gas in pipelines and metallic
containers. Hydrogen accumulation represents a fire or explosion danger. Potential ignition sources (sparks or flame)
are not allowed in the areas where equipment is located that contains hydrofluoric acid.

CONSTRUCTION MATERIALS
The appropriate selection of construction material to be used with Hydrofluoric acid is decided according to operation
conditions and variables that affect corrosion. Temperature, pressure, moisture and velocity, aeration and impurities
are factors that determine material selection. Each application of storage and handling must be studied carefully
before specifying the materials.

Anhydrous Hydrofluoric Acid - Ductile steel totally passivated (de-oxidized) is generally satisfactory for AHF storage
and handling at temperatures up to 150 F (66 C). Hydrogen blistering could occur if the plates contain inclusions.
a
De-sulphurized steels (0.10% maximum S) have less probabilities of blistering. For higher temperatures, MONEL
b c
and HASTELLOY may be acceptable. Fluorocarbon resins TEFLON TFE and FEP are resistant to all hydrofluoric
acid concentrations up to 500 F (260 C) and 400 F (204 C), respectively.
b a
For pumps used at ambient temperature ALLOY 20, HASTELLOY and MONEL may be acceptable.
Steel should not be used for close fitting moving parts because the corrosive film will shorten the tolerances and
cause their immobilization. Do not use forged steel, stainless steel class 400 or hardened steels for AHF service.
a
Hardened MONEL is conducive to corrosion cracking if air moisture is in contact with AHF or if a substantial aeration
occurs. Copper and its alloys are not recommended when flows are at high velocity.
